Of course they are not mutually exclusive, but they seems to be when describe the same process.
If someone considers his-/herself a victim, he/she won't be lazy about it.
If they are lazy about it they are not considering themselves to be a victim :shrug:

Never underestimate the appeal of feeling helpless.
 
He could do it, yes.
But a high-school student does not have the expertise to know why the way he arrived at the results is a correct way to arrive at those results.
To know something to be a truth, one also needs to know why their presumed knowledge isn't simply a lucky guess.

That is the task of a science teacher to show them how the conclusions were based on math, logic, and the scientific method.
