Re: SAM trolling... well... I've been personally banned several times for taunting SAM about her (what I call) OCD. She certainly behaves like a sufferer of obsessive and compulsive behaviour. It is very hard to have an enlightened, respectful discussion when someone keeps derailing it over and over and over. IMO she should have been banned many times, a long time ago. There has been at least one moderator who hasn't posted about this yet (you know who you are - I just sent you a PM!) who's been critical of SAM for a long time, but hasn't defended James' BAN of her. I want to hear your 2 cents on this.

Wow, there are people who troll WAY more badly than SAM. And worse: they troll with no agenda of logical argumentation. They're here just to annoy, basically. I can name who at least two of those people are right now... but I won't, because anyone who has followed my discussions probably already knows who those personae non gratae are anyway. They never post anything scientific and are here for no reason except to draw attention to themselves by establishing their idiotic cult of personality in the various non-scientific subforums that they encapsulate themselves in. I imagine that if you visit one of these troll's houses, you will find nobody living there except for a hateful, old, and probably overweight slob sitting at their computer nude and surrounded by an absurd number of cats.

That is not true, othead. Although she was once a truly bona fide troll (about 3-4 months ago) she has since acted very logically and very respectfully following a ban.
The people who continue to view her as a troll (james, electric, cheskicheps) have been inculcated to do so. Truth. And I think it goes without saying that for many people, what you expect becomes what you see. Those people need to divorce themselves from that attitude and to try and start thinking objectively for a change, if they truly want to break free from their own mental chains.

Oy vey... that moderator has a history of throwing his weight around by locking threads at random and verbalizing comparisons between fascist dictators and his own status as a mini-mod, all in a bizarre attempt to appear macho, forceful, and cool. Someone told me an admin gave him a chance to voluntarily unlock one of random threads he closed, but he wouldn't respond out of fear of being forcefully undermined.
Yeah somtimes i go bak to a thred to post a reply jus to find out the thred has been locked... which seems kinda weird to stop discussons in a discuss groop
But ive been used to the webtv groops whare discussons end when people are done talkin... yeah... i know... its a weird concept but i got kinda used to it after 11 years.!!!

If your assertions have any merit, they are, in this instance erroneous.
There have been complaints by several people regarding this thread, requesting that it be closed, and at least two (I think) instances of people posting in this thread, making the point that, essentially, it's a waste of bandwidth and should be closed.

I think you should provide some support and credibility to a fellow mod, especially given your long list of grievances against SAM!)
Her being less of a troll recently is people stopped (reduced) the amount of attention they provide her. For instance, I put her on ignore, a certain mod whose response I await here has stopped confronting her about her trolling, dishonesty, libel, derailment of topics etc. (I think he just gave up on it after hitting a brick wall every time... and believe me, he gave a valiant effort)... and a few other posters PM'd me indicating that they're going to try to stop responding to her crap. Her idiotic ban-worthy comments continued, but people stopped calling her out on it, and so the flame wars have not been as big as before when people did try to communicate with her. Also, people realized that no matter how hateful and vile her comments are, she ain't getting banned. So there is no point. Her responses were very predictable, and the direction of the conversation too, no matter what the topic is... hence people responded less to her. It didn't stop her from trying to put up everincreasingly disgusting topics though.

Yes, she was different. But she wasn't promoting debate. She was stifling it. She was derailing it. She was compulsively (in my opinion) using rhetorical devices and fallacies as arguments on and on and on... How any discussion can be had in such an environment is a mystery.
I hope she stays away after the 1 month is done. But I am really curious to know what she's up to in this month. It's the first time in years since she is away from this place for a long period of time... She is here every day almost all day. I wonder how she fills her time.

Also, could you enlightenment us as to what "interest" you have in this thread? Perhaps your continued advocacy of "free speech"? While SAM may very well be guilty of the crimes she is allegedly committed, and JamesR normally displays great integrity, I believe this particular situation degraded to a scene from the American old west - Sam, apologize or go for your gun!
Even this is really none of our business, I just would like to keep the diversity and, dare I say, irreverence that makes SF FUN! After all, we are speaking only of an internet forum, not a Congressional or Parliamentary debate. Let’s try to enjoy ourselves, encourage various POV’s and support an aura of tolerance.
Yes, there have to be limits, but these limits should be clearly defined and evenly enforced. Many make the case that SAM has gotten away with far to much for far too long. Who’s fault is this? I certainly don’t agree with much of what SAM actually says, but I do enjoy the “battles” that ensue when she is present. Same for JamesR - I highly respect his opinions, but I wish that he wouldn’t stifle “trouble” quite so much.
I’m all for gremlins, just not trolls, and I’m not quite convinced that SAM “trolls” enough to earn a perma-ban. Personally, it would seem that the 30 days was the only plea bargain that would be perhaps acceptable enough to both sides.
Mainly, I fear the “slippery slope” - let’s not lose all of our colorful posters - where would the fun be then? Do we really want this “scientific forum” to become a place solely for dry academic debate? I don’t - no fun there….
