Welcome, hope you can stay on for awhile, help use break the 1000 top best teams mark.
 
I threw in my pc as well. Question: I'm going to have to reinstall on it one of these days. It's actually overdue. (XP and I refuse to authenticate.) Will it still save my previous work over the reinstall or will it start from scratch?

How it seems to work is by frames, right? 400 frames per work unit? So, does it save each frame over the net or just locally? If it's locally, I might just be wasting my time because I doubt if I'll wait that long for the reinstall. I suppose there might be a way to backup the frames completed though, huh?

Anyone know?
 
I don't know how it works really, but as long as you do not wip out the partition its safed on then you should be able to reinstall it on a new os and start from were you left off.

is that one of the downloadable programs that use excess energy from computers to further scientific research computers? so that research progresses more quickly?
 
don't you think that while the computer is running like that, someone could get into your computer? i'm not paranoid, but think about it, if you're hooking the power of your computer up to this wired system of other computers, there has to be a transfer of information. i would think that your information would be vulnerable with such a connection.

When you are connected to the Internet, which you were while posting and which you are while reading this, you are connected to this wired system of computers and transferring information. That's what the Internet is all about.

Having said that, downloading and running any application is a potential security risk... however, I think it is safe to assume that the people at Stanford know what they are doing. Look here for their answer on security issues.
 
i know that's what the internet is about, but you have to think about it, at least then you're controlling what/where you are going/doing. when you've got the screensaver on, it's not in your control. also, does your comp have to be connected to the internet to have the screensaver running? that would cost a lot for dialup users

No, I do not. Without network sniffing tools, I would have no idea what Windows or any of the other programs that I've installed are doing with my Internet connection.

There are dozens of background tasks going on in the background of your computer of which you are told nothing regardless if you are working at your computer or if the screen saver is active. This folding@home progam would be just one more.

Woohoo!! 10th place already. Don't know how I got 2 WU. 1 took 3 days. The other must have just taken a few hours.

Edit: The active CPU's went from 5 to 10, as well. Must have guilted some people into cranking up their folders. :D

I've sneaked the client on three computers on my company... unfortunately, those machines are not that fast. I wonder how long it will take before employees will start to notice.

It really slows down Open Office document open and save times. (I'm working with some 400+ page docs)
I'm running the console version.
