Yeah right, because the majority always votes on the religious freedom of minorities. Which is okay in Switzerland but apparently doubtful elsewhere. I find it humorous that y'all are so excited about a minaret while bombing entire countries with no accountability.

Its architecture they don't want. Are they banning the religion? If the religion is nothing more than the building, I think that religion has issues.

I agree. I mean if they banned the Star of David from synagogues or the cross from churches, would there be an issue?

Apples and oranges.

It's fairly common to put zoning restrictions on church steeples, that kind of thing. Are the Swiss attempting to ban the crescent moon and star?

No just banning minarets. Do they have similar restrictions on any other religious group? There are 400,000 Muslims there and permission for prayer rooms is hard to come by. Are church steeples banned anywhere due to zoning laws?

Height limits are pretty common, and noise ordinances restricting the frequency and volume of their bells are very common,in the US.

Hmm are these recent? The Washington Cathedral seemed pretty tall to me. And it seems odd that there would be height restrictions in the US. Whats the basis?

Zoning restrictions, so you cant just put a 40 story tall skyscraper in a suburb.:D

Plus in certain areas no building can be taller than certain landmark buildings.

So essentially the height of minarets in Switzerland would already be under regulation by zoning restrictions and the call for prayer by sound regulations.

Basically, they just don't want to see them in the neighborhood.

Maybe Swiss Muslims should just build churches with steeples and omit the crosses [or switch them with a crescent] to be politically correct.

If Switzerland follows the same zoning and sound ordinances as the US probably.

...Maybe they should?

Did we ban the crescent moon? No.
There are plenty of mosques, and places of worship for Muslims in Switzerland. Imagine..there are even a few minarets. When you go to Islam.CH around 18 pages full of addresses to mosques, and places of worship appear. We just came to the conclusion that we don't need any more of these minarets.

Why don't they just deport/ban Muslims instead?

If there are no Muslims they don't have to worry about any influences of Islam.

That's absurd. I don't see how anyone can compare banning an architectural feature to banning a whole group of people.

I think, in the long term, it would be a more rational approach to subverting Islamic influences

Banning an architectural feature would actually contribute to greater fundamentalism.

No, it would make no sense for the Swiss extremists to vandalise the mosques as they have been doing, if there were no Muslims in Switzerland.

Their reactions will just show how much they have accepted and integrated into our society, our culture, our democracy.

If something is going to happen, then the decision of the Swiss folk was more than wise, more than necessary. Any violence coming from Muslims will just legitimise the fear against Islam even more. An other 'Danish cartoonist' incident on the way, hm? An other 'Madrid train bombing'? An other 'London bombing'? You know, isn't the UK one of the EU countries that has allowed Muslims to 'integrate' by allowing them to make use of their Shariah laws, hm? Looks like 'integrating' Muslims into Western societies doesn't save them from being attacked by radical Muslims.

Like the reactions of Jews did years ago?

I see this as going one of two ways - Switzerland will start banning burkhas, object to prayer timings, object to social activities of Muslims and eventually do what Europeans always do when faced with another religion or culture. Have a nice little pogrom. They've already started vandalising the mosques so that seems like the most likely route. Only 4 minarets and 5% of Muslims make them feel threatened enough to get there, a more visible Muslim population will drive them berserk.

The second, the ECHR will exert its influence and there will be a shift in how direct democracy works in Switzerland, with people becoming limited in their ability to choose what they can vote on. This is the less likely option

Either way, they will blame the Muslims for spoiling Brand Suisse. If I were a Swiss Muslim, I would be looking for alternatives to Switzerland. Better safe than sorry.
