Why do people believe?

To try and make this world a better place before I leave. To help others that are less fortunate. To just try and survive day to day.

what do you believe is reality?

what do you believe is common sense?

hence my question, what do you believe is the self?

You are the epitome of the article. One need not require "beliefs" for reality, common sense or the self.

So what do you believe makes the world more better or someone less fortunate?

I only try to do what I can do where I live and watch how I live. By trying to not make a very big footprint I am trying to save energy and keep the world a little greener by doing what I can do to help the ecology of our planet.

What are YOU doing?

once again, so what do you believe is your "I"?

What are YOU doing?
at the moment, trying to get a straight answer

Are animals fundamentally different than humans ?
Bear with me, I'm just trying to understand some stuff :)
the nature of having a self is equal across the board, although the expression of that self is filtered through the mind and body - hence we draw up distinctions not only of species but also gender, age, nationality etc
