The Trump Presidency

I spent some time with friends today - had lunch at an outdoor restaurant near a beach area and there seemed to be a festive feeling in the air. Like a collective tension was relieved. People were driving by, beeping horns and flying the American flag out of their windows, as well as Biden/Harris signs. Some guys jogged by shouting “Trump’s gone!” People were cheering.

No matter what side of the aisle voters sit on, all Americans should celebrate democracy. Biden talked recently about uniting us and that would be a great thing because there has been so much division in the US, especially over this past year.

One thing we can be pretty certain about is that once the veil of the Trump presidency is lifted there are going to be some pretty amazing stories to read about...perhaps some FBI involvement etc etc...
There are many outstanding corruption issues yet to be fully investigated....
I hope he doesn't make anything from book sales. He has stiffed us enough as it is.

Everybody mentions that. Nobody asks how it came about.
Well I have noticed it since the Iraq war and worried about it.
But I am not sure why it has got so bad.

Perhaps it is a consequence of the break up of the USSR.

They were the glue that held the Western democracies together ;an external existential threat.

That artificial bond has diminished and we are free to turn in on ourselves.

A lot more to it than that,of course.

Listening to Joe Biden speaking to acknowledge his election I wish him well and he is indeed well suited to the task of creating more unity in his country but I cannot say I am optimistic.

Perhaps the task of transforming the economy into something that deals with the global warming crisis will provide something that a larger majority of our countries can unite around.

We have a new external enemy in the shape of the planet that will not allow us to run the same fossil fuel show that we have up till now.

Maybe that transformation will provide a new unity for a generation or so ,or maybe even longer.

Nicely put and some valid points...

I tend to think that if Biden forms a national cabinet of state governors that can publicly negotiate a solution to this Covid crisis and act as Federal mediator, similar to how the Australian PM handled the early days here, he will achieve something outstanding. Being public means that the governors will have to lean towards reason-ability and acts that are not will be viewed politically tenuous. Providing leadership and unification simultaneously. Then if House and the Senate are required the mandate for action or not will be obvious.

Notes:
After he had completed his speech one can not help but notice the terrific diversity of culture and ethnicity on the stage with him. Impressive IMO.
Congratulations USA!
Let the hard work begin...

It was made artificially, some considerable while before the Bush era.
In the 60's, there was a good deal of strife in the South - but there was also quite a lot of reconciliation and progress. The positive side might well have continued - with some necessary sidelining of hard-core bigots - because the South was having a renaissance of prosperity and culture and the mid-western states were asserting its independent identity. There was more social, as well as physical mobility and more opportunities for education, innovation and expansion all over the country. There was great optimism - and periods of optimism tend to lead to more liberal policies, and a very great deal of student activism for political change. However, they also empower classes of citizen who had little or no power previously: the working class, minorities and women.
Can you imagine what would happen to the super-rich if those three groups discovered their common interest and pooled their efforts?
The response, predictably enough, to set them against one another. At any cost.
For Nixon, persecuting students and African Americans was just a means to getting the right wing on his side and garner votes among the disgruntled racist white men.
That base has since been exploited and inflamed by the republicans ever since. Their propaganda network is enormous, pernicious and pervasive. Many of those people are far beyond the reach of reason or compromise. We don't understand them, not because we fail to listen, but because they refuse to speak the same language.

How does Trump (or anyone) stiff us by making money from a book?
I admit to bearing him ill will .I think he has deserved it.

But it is fairly common to hear it said that convicted criminals should not profit from their crimes by making a book about their deeds.

I would put Trump broadly in that category

I noticed how Biden attempted to marry science and his faith, how his Christian views were entirely compatible with science. This bodes well compared to the Trump legacy of having problems with science...IMO
It also means hopefully, that he is not relying on the almighty to solve the Covid problems the USA is facing...and actually do something constructive about it...

I would too except that he hasn't been convicted. I'm just glad to know that he will be leaving soon. NY may prosecute him on tax evasion charges. You never know.

The Trump campaign took a play out of the Monty Python manual, with the latest press conference in Philly.

In this skit, (which is actually quite funny) the organizers are told to book the Four Seasons Hotel, but book the Four Seasons Motel instead, then try to fix the mistake and end up booking the Four Seasons Landscaping Co.

It's too late to reschedule the very important presser, with all the important announcements etc, so they do their best, but John Cleese should have played Rudy Giuliani; then again perhaps he did.

Not seeing that (and Nevada is only 6 college votes)

You must have mistakenly written 290 instead of 279?
Some outlets have given Arizona (11 votes) to Biden, while others (including BBC) have yet to do so. These 11 would put Biden on 290.

I have been laughing about this all day.

It is a fitting end..

And one that has produced some truly hysterical memes.. My favourite:

“RUDY, HAVE YOU EVER USED FOUR SEASONS MANSCAPING?

Yes this last collapse of the Trump campaign into ignominious farce is hilarious.

It seems no one at Four Seasons Landscaping Centre corrected their misapprehension that they were booking the Four Seasons hotel in downtown Philadelphia. So Giuliani, his team, and all the film crews and journos had to drive like buggery all over Philadelphia, trying to find this garden centre out in the suburbs, sandwiched between a porno shop and a crematorium - the symbolism of which did not go unmarked.

So then they had to hastily drape some Trump stickers across the door of that garage in front of which they held their news conference - and pretend it was all planned!

The bit that makes me keep on breaking out in a snigger is that Giuliani is such an irascible man. He must have been hopping mad on the car drive to buttfuck nowhere, and totally disorientated! No wonder he was so cross when the journalists told him Biden had been declared the winner.

I think it's great - worthy of Borat in fact. :D:D
