The US would have to stage troops into the zone and support them to get to the 'overrun' situation in your last sentence. Right now you're just talking about airstrikes and cruise - and I've provided a little example conflict above where a force with limited technology bled an American air effort. Hey, remember something else called Yom Kippur? Syria was using Soviet arms of limited effectiveness and still managed to stymie the Israeli Air Force. So as usual your contentions rely on assumptions that are not supported with evidence or reason, like this naive belief that because the US managed to walk over the Iraqis, they could do the same to the Syrians. Maybe you should take the lives of American pilots with a little more seriousness. As it stands now, Obama is leaning more towards cruise, I hear. Hope the civvy deaths stay low.

quinnsong, I hope you realize that it is really hard to accurately state ones true position on any critically "deep" subject on-line, for me at least. I grew up learning to communicate "face-to-face" - where you get immediate "feedback" and can tell from peoples expressions and body language if they are actually "getting it" or if you inadvertently "strike a nerve".

Nowadays, it seems kind of like : Words = ...quick...surgical strikes...shock and awe...in and out...3 to 4 days...a week tops...!
Then : Action = ...weeks...months...known unknowns...here too...more...weeks...months...unknown unknowns...there too...stay until trained...weeks...months...troop surges...!
Then, more : Words = ...never said that...finish the job...more terrorists...over there now...he started it, but I will end it...war on terrorism...I repeat, I never said that...won't be finished until...troops home by...can't stop now...must remain vigilant...!

Way back earlier in this Thread - probably first few pages, I stated about the push to go into Syria - we were sold that "fraudulent Bill of Goods" before - seemed like Humanitarian Reasons by the words...Heck, don't I remember George W., #43, on a flight deck under a banner reading "Mission Accomplished"? Yet, somehow that "Action" is still not finished - and look at all that "Humanitarian Aid" that the people of Iraq and Afghanistan are still getting!
But, from what I understand, it is just me, dmoe, the "Bigoted, Racist, anti-Semitic, Supremacist..." that imagines all of that!

Three Russian warships crossed Turkey's Bosphorus Strait Thursday en route to the eastern Mediterranean, near the Syrian coast, amid concern in the region over potential US-led strikes in response to the Damascus regime's alleged use of chemical weapons.

The SSV-201 intelligence ship Priazovye, accompanied by the two landing ships Minsk and Novocherkassk passed through the Bosphorus known as the Istanbul strait that separates Asia from Europe, an AFP photographer reported.

Not exactly a carrier force, but I think the landing craft are Ropucha class tank landers, which can carry a decent chunk of an armoured regiment. If the Russians intend just to frustrate American activity in the eastern Mediterranean, why send tank landing craft?? Wouldn't more frigates or cruisers be a better demonstration of strength? I don't recall the Russians ever performing a sea landing deployment in the modern era, so I don't think there's any precedent to guess at their intentions. Maybe these were just the only ships available. But two of them? Odd.

The Russian warships are there to do a military exercise of "peacekeeping" with latest missiles, just like the latest joint US-Israel "peacekeeping" military missile exercise.

I suggest you look up the meaning of cherry picking. It’s obvious you are pretty clueless when it comes to logic and reason. There was no cherry picking. The unpleasant fact for you is that inferior weapons are still inferior no matter how effectively they are used. The US has superior weaponry and knows how to use its weapons. It also has the advantage of having not only a well-trained military but a military that has been seasoned with live combat experience.

You are always good for a bit of entertainment. And before you start worrying about someone else’s education, you need to give your own some prolonged contemplation. In case you haven’t noticed, the Yom Kippur War occurred some 40 years ago. It was a surprise attack against Israel which was attacked on multiple fronts by 4 nations and the Israeli’s were outnumbered by more than two to one. To compare the Yom Kippur War to this situation is frankly desperate and ignorant. So yet again, your conclusions are not merited by the facts. What you have done here really is cherry picking…not to mention making a false analogy.

Heh. I still don't get the choice of ships though, but I think I saw a link about the Russians using other landing vessels in the same squadron/flotilla. Maybe this is some kind of bizarre Russian military tradition or gap-filling with whatever's around.

Perhaps by the numbers, but watch that old footage of our sailors literally dumping helicopters overboard in order to get the hell out of the sector faster. It's easy enough to say the US lost, but our troops sure as hell left there like they got their asses kicked.
