The Greatest Lesson: Love
Love
Introduction about the Lessons of Love
I will be posting a series of Lessons about Love. One is not enought. Why?
The Bible is the Book Of Love. It talks basically about Love, so lets see what the Bible says about it.
Lesson1: 1 Corinthians 13
The Importance of Love
What makes a Christian Christian is not the cross, it's Love. If you worship God but have no Love, you are lying to God! God is Love! Worship Love and you'll be worshiping God! If you have no Love, you have nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3:
"1 If I had the gift of being able to speak in tongues, and could speak in every language there is in all heaven and earth, but I didn't love others, it would be of no value whatever. I would only be making a lot of noise.
2 If I had the gift of prophecy and understood all myteries-knew everything about everything- but didn't love others, what good would it be? Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love.
3 If I gave everything I have to poor people, and if I were burned alive for preaching the Gospel but didn't love others, it would be of no value whatever."
Another traduction reads:
"1 If I speak with tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, Iam nothing.
3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, I am nothing."
1 Corinthians 13:8-10 :
"8 All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end, but love goes on forever. Someday prophecy, and speaking in tongues, and special knowledge - these gifts will disappear.
9 For even our special knowlegde and our prophecy are incomplete.
10 But when the perfect comes [that is, when we see God face to face], the need for these special gifts will come to an end, and they will disappear."
Another traduction:
"8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away."
The perfect, that those passages are talking about, is God and God is Love. This whole chapter talks about The Perfection. Love is perfect, God is perfect. The gifts from the Heavens are just a part of Love. But Love is everything that we need, because it's fulfilling and complete by Itself.
The Characteristics of Love
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 :
"4 Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud,
5 nver haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong.
6 It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out.
7 If you love someone you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will allways believe in him, allways expect the best of him, and allways stand the ground to defend him."
Another traduction:
"4 Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek it's own, is not provoked, does not take a wrong suffered, (THANK GOD!)
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
See if you really Love someone...
I do...
The Mystery Of All Mysteries
1 Corinthians 13:11-12 :
"11 It's like this: when I was a child I spoke and thought and reasoned like a child does. But when I became a man my thoughts grew far beyond those of my childhood, and now I have to put away my childish things.
12 In the same way, we can see and understand only a little bit about God now, as if we were peerong at his reflection in a poor mirror; but someday we are going to see Him in His completeness, face to face. Now all that I know is hazy and blurred, but then I will see everything clearly, just as clearly as God sees into my heart now."
Another traduction:
"11 When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known."
This passage has two interpretations:
1. We, as Christians, are the children of God and we are spiritually growing in Faith and Love. It's said: "... we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face;...". Remember that in the Genesis God said that He made us to be like Him? That's what it means. It means that in the end, we will look in a mirror and see Him. We will see that we are made by Pure Love.
Another part: "...now I know in part, but then I shall know fully...". Again, it talks about our future: Omniscience. We will fully know ourselves, we will see, understand, realize, that we are purely Love.
2. It means too that you can discover yourself through someone else. If you give Love to someone, you will see your Love reflected in this persons actions and reactions (the reflection in the mirror).
Curiosities about this verses:
1. Eventhough here we talk about growing up, from children to adult, in Matthew it is said that only children can enter in the kingdom of God. In 1 Corinthians 13, children means something different then in Matthew. I'll talk about the "Matthew point of view" later, when I'll talk about "how" to enter in the Kingdom of Heavens.
2. There is a connection between this verses and the Genesis. In the Genesis, it's said that God created us to be like Him. Here, we see its fulfillment.
Genesis 1:27 :
"27 So God made man like his Maker.
Like God did God make man;
Man and maid did he make them."
Conclusion
1 Corinthians 13:13 :
"13 There are three things that remain- faith, hope, and love- and the greatest of these is love."
Another traduction:
"13 But now abide faith, hope and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
Well... don't even need to say a word...
