Congratulations America - you got the president you deserve

Matt Gaetz appears to be an extraordinarily wayward choice, but I guess only an incredibly reckless individual like that would risk doing whatever Trump wants at Attorney General. (In contrast to the friction with Jeff Sessions and to a lesser extent even William Barr, during Trump's first term.)

So as OMG as it seems to everybody else, I guess it is a calculated selection in the context of what Trump ultimately wants. But Gaetz is still a tossed hand grenade rolling around in a crowd -- there's no self-control there with respect to his habits and conduct.

I think with the allegations/scandals swirling around him, Gaetz is just a bad choice. I’ve always thought that optics matter with these appointments.

He’s been pretty successful (depending how you define that) regardless of his failed business ventures, but part of that success comes from the byproduct of being a “celebrity.”
He was handed over 400 million dollars sometime in the late 1970s--in today's economy, that would be roughly 1.6 billion dollars. He is estimated to be "worth" far less than that sum. That takes a staggering level of idiocy and incompetence.

As far as being a "celebrity", which for him is being on tv? I think I could get on tv pretty easily if someone handed e a billion dollars. I've been on tv, in fact, and I come from poverty--though not the sort of tv that reaches a wide audience, and not that I would care anyway. If I were handed even a fraction of that sum, I could easily reach a huge audience if that were my aim.

Trump has no idea how to run a business. He inherited a fortune from his dad and has gone bust numerous times. He's a fraud and, as a recent court case has shown, a crook in his business dealings as well.

As for being less impulsive, what about the people he has chosen for the major offices of government? A Fox news commentator to run the Defense[sic] Dept? A health crank in charge of health? A suspected trafficker in under age sex as Attorney General? And as head of the intelligence services someone with no experience but a history of repeating Russian propaganda? If these appointments are not impulsive, they are evidence of extremely sinister motives: a deliberate drive to put all the main offices of government in the hands of fools and incompetents, who will have to rely on their loyalty to him to preserve their positions. This is how democracies are turned into autocracy.
They are also an excellent means for testing loyalty--will the rest of the GOP embrace these idiots as Trump has ordained? Another classic fascistic move.

I think we got the best presidency money could buy.

I'm glad I'm old.
The Harris campaign raised over a billion dollars. Trump's campaign raised about one third of that.

Probably those figures don't include the contributions of PACs and the like.

That was the main thing that had me optimistic.(lots of small donations and seeming enthusiasm )

Think Trump will try to hand over to someone else I don't think he can (or would want to) run again as he would need much more than a simple majority as well as an obvious reason that he is any good at anything except getting elected.

I still hope he gets put in prison at the end of this stint (or if he has to retire)

And zealots working for nada. That the way politicians get around spending limits.

"Zealots working for nada" sounds good to me.

Of course not everyone can afford to work for nothing so that could possibly be unfair but I would be much happier if money could be taken out of the equation as much as possible.

It's all about money, so no, not happening.
In 2016 Trump got lots of small donations and this time it was Harris.

That was good.

It is the large donations that are undemocratic and manipulative even if they can be counter productive.

That said I would contribute to a gofundme with the aim of persuading Trump and his brood to take a long jump off a short pier.

Broke candidates don't get elected, they frequently don't get on the ballot. No money no washee.
Can't any independent candidate run for the Senate or Congress?

Even the Presidency?

Surely if someone has ideas that are convincing they could run .

I think in the UK they have to put up a deposit and if they get something like 5% of the vote it is returned.

I don't think you have the personality to be able to do that, money or not. Hopefully you understand what I just wrote.

Apparently, there was about $15 billion of dark money from oligarchs that went towards Trumps campaign, the final tally has yet to come in.

Trump completely squandered the almost half billion dollars his dad gave him. He had multiple bankruptcies and was almost broke, but the one thing that saved him was "The Apprentice". If not for the money he made from that, we wouldn't be seeing him in the white house.

The term "independent candidate" as used in the US, is one who isn't aligned with an established political party. They're assumed to be poorly funded campaigns compared with the major parties.

Yet, we do see him in the White House. Would we have seen Jack Kennedy without his dad's money and influence?

Have you learned your lesson regarding the $250 housing capital gains exclusion? You've been quite on that one.

The lesson I learned is how great a candidate you are for Dunning Kruger.
