Atheism is a belief.

I know how to use a dictionary.

Would that be the same kind of 'belief' one has in a supernatural sky daddy or the kind of 'belief' in the sun rising in the morning?

And to look at it psychologically: it seems very important whether or not atheism is a belief to BOTH theists and atheists.

Athiesm is a belief. Otherwise one would not defend it. Why promote it?
Whats with all the "religious zeal" anyway?
If you do not believe in something you do not have a supporting opinion about it.

If one thinks that they hold anything beyond beliefs in this universe at this time they are deluded. I purport, not picking on atheists, that every tenet held by man is based in belief. So, no, atheists cannot shirk their responsibility no matter how eloquent, intuitive, intelligent they may believe their argument to be.

If this avenue of rationale has been explored in this thread already, my apologies.

I wonder if theists could actually hold the concept of atheism as a belief? It is beyond the concept they already hold as a belief that god is real, that the universe simply would not exist without god and that god is everywhere all at once.

Theists couldn't imagine a world conflicting with this belief. Sheer madness, impossible, lunacy, they would cry.

So do you believe the Easter Bunny doesn't exist, or do you know so ?

i believe therefore i am.

many of us believe that we exist in the reality that we perceive.

but it is only a belief, for our perception may be flawed. it may be flawed for all of us.

the reality that we perceive, that we believe in, may not exist.

so in truth all things are belief based. i believe that i am typing because what i perceive tells me that i am.

many of us have had our perception skewed by fever, bump on the head, psychosis of a kind or drugs/alcohol. suddenly what we believe is not the same as what others around us are percieving. so it could be said that reality is highly influenced by peers. with the right sort of peers we could all believe that we are the love children of dolphins and that the trees are angry gods coming to take us to eternal death.

i personally like to believe that some being has created this entire "universe" for us. it could be as true as it could be false. it certainly, makes a great story.

how about this one....

if god is eternal then why did he wait so long to create us?

how are you defining "know"?

I'm overcome by all the smart people on this site but, at the risk of making a fool of myself, I'll suggest that when you talk of knowing god you are talking of knowledge by acquaintance.

If I am wrong perhaps we can explore another avenue of rationale once I find out what that means. How do you define convoluted language ?

Well, as the man from the Salvation Army said: " Fuck drunkards, and if they have any relatives in Australia, fuck them too!
