how many of these civilisations or individuals prophesised the exact date of their own demise ?

Couldn't help but notice that Sirfreak ran from this thread like a scared chicken. Maybe next time he won't be so quick to post nonsense. ;)

(But why do I have a sinking feeling that he actually learned nothing from his foolishness??)

Ehh...

Though I do agree with you:rolleyes: , I do think that why people believe in this hype has a lot of reasons:
1. there is much speculation about 12/21/12 being the day of the apocalypse. After all, a lot of the current disasters taking place are what the bible said would happen before Armageddon.
2. even if that weren't true, there's still the thing about the Myan calendar going to Baktun 13. Of course, we all know here that it's only a passage of time, and that the world won't end, any more than the end of the month on a calendar will.
3. the shift of earth's magnetic field. Yes, this is shocking, but it's probably all just hype. First, nobody can know the exact date this is going to take place, let alone the year. Also, even if it does shift in 2012, life has lived through it before, and it will again.

Yes, I know that this is an exceptionally long post, and that I am really quiet in person, but you would never see the end of it if the conversation was about science:D So, these are my thoughts for December 21st, 2012, and what will NOT happen. Or will:mufc:

Back to the top.. What does everyone have to say about it? I think there is to much coincidence to be nothing.. No I dont think the world is going to end, but do think something is going to happen

I think it comes down to people being bored or just tired of what they see as repetition in their lives. This gives way to things like fear or even anticipation of something that will possibly change things, even if it's for the worse, in their lives. Personally I think the world will end but not spectacularly, and not for a long time. There are lots of things you can look at that could be preludes to the end of the human race, mass starvation in some countries, overpopulation, destruction of the oceans which could damage oxygen levels, wars, etc...
that however will be a slow death for humanity unless a major pandemic hits.
There will always be enterprising individuals taking advantage of these situations, hell, how do you think religions got started. But that's my take on it.
Of course, there's always the possibility of a specific date for destruction actually occurring and won't those of us that didn't prepare have eggs on our face if it does :p

What coincidences?

Dr. Calloman, a Swedish biologist analysed the Mayan records and re-calculated the last date of the calendar as October 30th 2011.

That did not indicate the end of the world, only the omega point - the singularity in the
helix of change.

In any case the world ended on Tuesday October 23rd 999 in Bukhara, (now in Uzbekistan).

What's all thus stuff that's still going on then? Its the 'end of the world party' - Have fun!

End of the world?!?!.....NO!

I don't believe this date to be the "end of the world", but definately a date of much importance. This date in question seems to have a focal point on a drastic change in mans evolution whether or not that means the second coming of christ I'm not sure but the bible does state "no man will knoweth when this day comes" but it also goes on to tell us there will be signs before the "end". I hope this is the start of a cleansing of mankind. Look around we NEED a wake-up call. There isn't the love for one another anymore and mankind has put all meaning to ones life in the form of money! Evolution didn't start out this way and I highly doubt this is what God had intended for his sons and daughters when we were created. Either way if this turns out to be nothing hopefully it at least scared enough people and woke them up before it's too late for mankind!

Uhm, mayan calendar was before day light savings time was invented. so technically, the world should have already ended a while ago. Case closed, i hate all the 2012 hype!

Something interests me.

I was reading up on Cognitive Dissonance and came across the book "When Prophecy Fails" by Leon Festinger. In the book he in investigated some UFO cult. The cult believed that the world would end on December 21st, 1954. Of course the world didn't end, but isn't it interesting that it is the same date?

My theory is that the alien told her Dec 21st, 2012, but she decided that was too long to wait for some fear mongering and cash crowing, so she fabricated the prophecy for 1954 and added in a great flood for extra fear mongering instead. Seeing as the Maya have more credibility than some cult leader, and that the Galactic Alignment is on this date, I will bet on Dec 21 2012, something extraordinary will happen.

Try again. The Mayans were excellent astrologers. They didn't leave out leap years, they just calculated it in. You should look things up before you post, and while you're at it, you can look up leap years, also.

Lol. I agree with the first sentence and first part of the second sentence, but take your religious proselytizing to a site who is more niave to believe that crap.

1 biologist cannot disprove many other archaeologists and researchers who have always said it was 12/21/12. And not 999. No one actually believed that crackpot anyway.

I agree with you. Starting to read this thread now. Thanks for showing people the up and up.

The planets are not going to line up on December 21, 2012. You have been sold a bunch of malarkey.

I'm pretty sure he meant the Galactic Alignment, which I had confused with the planetary alignments not that long ago.

Again, get real !!! It's YOUR silly claim that ALL of those predict something happening "in the same month of the same year" and I say that's nuts.

So since YOU made the claim it's up to YOU to prove it - either that or admit you were just being silly. :bugeye:

There is nothing to gain by proving it. Why repeat what research can provide you on your own? Its not like we are a religion wanting to recruit members. We having anything to gain and nothing to lose by hand feeding you information. If it doesn't interest you, than don't research it. That is up to you.
