2012 thread

2012, is a lie,
there was another one in the 90s, that says that 2000 is the end of the world,
also another one that said that 1950 is the end...
it's just a movie, why do they beleive it,
in 2012, it will be there a solar storm, but, not the end of the world

the Y2K thing was legitimate. The only reason it didnt work was our debuggers were too stupid to notice the blatent problem in front of them.

But those fixes made were necessary because the debuggers we have now would see the problem and declare the file corrupt and you could never see it again.

That's not quite right. The problem was caused by managers who didn't want to allocate the funds for a large project that they could put off until they had moved on and it became somebody else's problem. I described the problem and the efforts to solve it in my earlier post in this thread. It had nothing to do with the skill of the technical staff, many of whom began to realize the frightening scope of the unremediated code at least ten years before Y2K, as I did. My organization started work on it in 1995 and finished in 1999, with no "green blanket" systems left to fix later.

Capers Jones, one of the legendary figures in information technology, began lobbying government and corporate leaders about the problem as early as 1994. His successes were unfortunately rare, if important. Drugs with invalid expiration dates can kill people, and he persuaded some pharmaceutical companies to begin their remediation projects early enough to complete them without rushing.

Your talking about the problem of fixing it.

Im talking about the problem itself.

I guess I left you speechless with my last post Fraggle! Which is all the more impressive considering you're a linguist ;)

You're talking about the problem of fixing it. I'm talking about the problem itself.
I also described the problem. In 1967, when I started as a programmer, computers received their input transactions on punch cards, which had 80 columns. To use two of those columns for the unvarying "19" would have been profligate.

We knew the day would come when 21st century dates would need to be recorded. But up until then, every five years all computer hardware and software became obsolete when the next shiny new generation of technology was invented. All programs had to be rewritten from requirements. During one of those forthcoming generation-shifts a new input device would be available that would free us from the 80-character constraint, so when we threw out our old software at that time, we'd write the new software to store four-digit years.

Nobody could foresee that when the IBM 360 mainframe came out, from that day on all future computers would be compatible with old hardware and software formats. All existing programs would still run correctly and all existing data storage would still be readable. Programs and data from 1957 would not work on a computer built in 1967, but programs we wrote in 1967 are still running.

At that point it became simply a matter of allocating the resources to expand the year field in all existing programs to four digits. Resources = money, so I don't need to explain why the problem was put off, and put off, and put off, until driver's license and life insurance software finally began to fail and our managers could no longer pretend it was too early to bother.

Other crises like this are looming. With the explosion of direct-dial office numbers, cell phones and other devices using telephony, the USA is going to run out of ten-digit telephone numbers in about fifteen years. Nine-digit ZIP codes and nine-digit Social Security numbers won't be too far behind.

So, how many of you people have faith that the world learned its lesson from Y2K? Does the U.S. government, the world's largest and slowest-moving bureaucracy, have an army of programmers working hard to prevent these crises right now?

Or will people be auctioning off their dead grandpa's cell phone for $5,000?

Okay, you've made it obvious to me now that you're purposely not addressing my last post. That's okay, I'll take it as a checkmate. Good game :)

The closed-mindedness that I perceive from many "scientists" here is not my own imagination. Here's a quote from the book "Chaos" by James Gleick illustrating the rigidity and resistance of the scientific institution to the burgeoning science that we now call and accept as "chaos." There are many more instances throughout this book and I highly recommend the read. Still even more instances can be found in almost, if not all, other fields of science, when they were just breakthroughs by one or a few people and not yet accepted, throughout history.

"Incomprehension; resistance; anger; acceptance. Those who had promoted chaos longest saw all of these. Joseph Ford of the Georgia Institute of Technology remembered lecturing to a thermodynamics group in the 1970s and mentioning that there was a chaotic behavior in the Duffing equation, a well-known textbook model for a simple oscillator subject to friction. To Ford, the presence of chaos in the Duffing equation was a curious fact--just one of those things he knew to be true, although several years passed before it was published in Physical Review Letters. But he might as well have told a gathering of paleontologists that dinosaurs had feathers. They knew better.
"When I sad that? Jee-sus Christ, the audience began to bounce up and down. It was, 'My daddy played with the Duffing equation, and my granddaddy played with the Duffing equation, and nobody seen anything like what you're talking about.' You would really run across resistance to the notion that nature is complicated. What I didn't understand was the hostility."

State, hes not addressing you because he lost, hes not addressing you because a person like him does not want to be associated with wacko pseudo science.

But I have debated against a lot of 2012ers and won, so what is it that all your fuss is about?

question
i know earth wont pass the galactic plane... but our sun and earth will line up with the center of the galaxy wont it?

i know this wont have any effect on anything, just trying to make sure im getting my facts right... i think that would be pretty cool.
may have already been posted, and im not gonna lie, im in college and just dont have time to read through everything, theyre so damn long... so just a simple yes or no will suffice.

I've never gotten a straight answer regarding our solar system passing through the galactic plane. Mainly, there does not seem to be a clear definition of what the galactic plane even is. I don't think there is even a single, clear understanding of the gravitational physics of the galaxy. Until we can all agree on the physics, how can we possibly attempt to define any relevant plane, and how the physics of this plane would affect our solar system?

There is scientific news, and in fact has nothing to do with science, spread largely on news sites and summarized below:

"Magazine published Newoosaentest America specializing in science and technology report academically by a team of scientists in which they emphasized that in the day of the end of September 2012 will hit the Earth solar storm devastating could the world back to the era of the Middle Ages. The researchers suggest this storm to the swarms Sub-sub-particles of electrically charged ring of the sun the earth and surrounded by a regular periodic basis.

The specialists that the phenomena of this storm, the overcrowding of the sky glow heavy fire add to the spread of columns to ripple green incandescent, and coming up on the horizon orange successive waves during the most prominent display of the aurora polaris, which is seen in the middle of the northern hemisphere. "

If we look at what was written by NASA scientists, they're talking about the cycle of the sun in 2012 will be stronger up to 50% of its predecessor, will have some side effects on the ground, are shown in Figure severity of the next session in 2012 will be stronger than its predecessor (note me how repeated this session of the sun each almost 11 years and are usually strong or weak), high red lines reflect the severity of a solar storm, and graph shows that in 1958 solar storm occurred most of which will occur in 2012. Reference Centre for Atmospheric Research

Said David Morrison, a specialist in space science at NASA, "NASA," that the rumors about what really expected by the end of the world in December 2012 "just a great trick," denying the existence of a mysterious planet is about to hit the Earth at that date.

He called on people to "enjoy their time" on that date, and prepare for later as just a normal day, in the context of its efforts, "NASA" to reassure people in different countries over what is broadcast rumors of mass destruction will impose on the land in 2012, which led to the allocation of page of its formal response to these expectations.

Scientists confirm that NASA does not expect that something will happen on that date, Vahaiat transferred by Web sites and attributed to the research-based civilization, "Maya" old in Central America, are merely "a great trick." Regarding the possibility of a collision mysterious planet some call "Nipro" the planet, "said the American world:" There is no planet called Nipro .. that does not exist .. do not worry about this day and theirs after. "

It is noteworthy that many believe that the world will end on that date, concerns have been strengthened with the advent of the new movie "2012", which was passed on a lot of books and websites that put on their pages for hours, the timing of descending on 21 December 2012.

This indicates the date to the end of the life cycle of the Mayan civilization, which has a length of 5126 years. Have long known about the Mayan civilization passion and knowledge of astronomy has deep knowledge. Not yet known whether the choice of this particular day because of a global catastrophe will end the world, which sparked a number of theories about the end of the universe.

According to several theories of the earth on that day will start spinning the opposite, and that this day will be a lot of solar storms, which will lead to volcanic eruptions, and melting snow. It is noteworthy that on December 21 / December 2012 corresponds to the day in the winter solstice, and that this day will see the equivalent of the sun with the galaxy the "Milky Way." Scientists also refuted allegations of a coup in the Earth polar centers appeal, saying that this phenomenon occurred every 400 thousand years ago, and they occur again take thousands of years.

Of course, this news is not accurate scientifically, it is the personal opinion of one scientist not based on scientific evidence. In fact, this researcher did not tell us where it came from such predictions, and on what basis say such a thing! How can the solar storm, which occur constantly be devastating to the land? Why change the physical laws of which the God of the universe it? From where will come the energy needed for these solar particles to reach and penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, knowing that the sun has passed five billion years, and there are millions of solar storms ...

Site deployment CNN that this news about the prophecy of 2012: "While the blows of our imagination forecasts for the year 2000, and raised about it by the end of the world, began to apply our speculation about the end of the life cycle in 2012. Some believe that the solutions in 2012 heralded a new era, while others think that this year is definitely not the end of the globe, which is passed on a lot of books and websites that put on their pages for hours, the timing of descending on 21 December 2012, the day promised.

David Stuart, director of the Center, "Mesoamerica" at the University of Texas: "There are a lot of people who believe that the end of the universe associated with their beliefs Maya, this is not correct, because there was no wise Mayan people, he said this."

On the other hand, if you enter 2012 in any of the search engines on the Internet, you will find a lot of sites on this subject, some of which provide guidance on how to survive the day, and others give instructions on what to wear, including T-shirts reading "2012 .. the end", or "the resurrection of 2012."

According to a number of theories that the earth in that day will start spinning the opposite, and that this day will be a lot of solar storms that will lead to volcanic eruptions, and melting snow. If you think that all of this can be a great American film

If we go back to the site of the U.S. space agency NASA, we find that they publish a story about an ordinary solar storm continue to occur every 11-year period called the Sunspot Cycle, and in 2012 there will be a storm of this stronger-than-average limits of 30-50% and this is very normal.

But what happened is that some of those who believe in the myths of the Maya (an ancient culture, and found thousands of years ago in America), those found in the compatibility between today promised to have in 2012 and the solar cycle that will occur in the same year, they found in this agreement an opportunity to promote their ideas ... Will prove the coming years lies these astrologers, for the very simple reason is that this prediction is not based on any scientific basis but exaggerations and falsehoods.

Successful scientists from the Centre for Atmospheric Research UCAR forecasting storm solar that will occur in 2012 and this storm occurs every 11 years, and next storm may cause some damage to satellites and may affect some of the electricity networks, because some of the solar particle associated with the storm could succeed in infiltration through the atmosphere and affect communication systems, and these predictions may occur in one way or another.

There is Zero evidence of any "End of the world threat" on, around or near 2012.
There is zero evidence of any Plant X, Nubiru, Zetans or Nancy Leiders trustworthiness.

There is no substantial claim that the Mayan calender PREDICTS the end of the world. Rather, the calender simply rolls over just as December rolls over into January.
Additionally, that date for that roll over is not 2012. That was a miscalculation that Nancy Leider had snapped up too quickly without checking things out.

yup, i was sure of that even before i searched for it, and that's what i said, it's a big lie, we'll just live another happy day, but it will be there a solar storm, that it may affect alittle bet on the phone lines and sattelites, some dammages, but not even the end,

post a link to the evidence supporting that 2000 was the end of the world. and not just a complete collaps of the computer networking system.
and you do realize what a solar storm is capable of?

i wasnt trying to prove that the end of the world was suposed to be in 2012 or 2000, i said, it's a big lie! and a myth!
why should i provve something wich i don't even beleive it?

yes,i know what a solar storm is capable of, but i let's hope it don't make a very bad dammage,

I think he was trying to be sarcastic...

Anyone ever stop to think that 2012 may be one of the greatest days in history?

Nothing has been verified or true, except for the fact about solar activity.
It's quite interesting actually, this is the most active our sun has ever been.
The sun is actually pulsing. Peaks of radiance. The energy dynamics required to do so are astounding. It's also evident of our sun being unstable. I'm excited to see the sun at the peak of this cycle.

and that yellowstone part is rising. and is a supervolcano

The approach of December 21, 2012 means ever more disaster mongers and ever more innocent victims who fall prey to these disaster mongers. This thread will act as a collect-all for all things 2012.

The world will not end on December 21, 2012. So why all this disaster mongering? Simple: There is money to be made in hawking 2012 as the end of everything, and lots of it. The movie 2012, for example, grossed over $700 million. 2012 books are selling at a ferocious rate.

Some facts:
  • The world will not end on December 21, 2012. Period.
  • The Mayan calendar does not end on that date. That date is more akin to December 31, 999 in our calendar. The next year has a lot of zeros and a new digit. BTW, disaster mongers made lots of money back in 999. This hawking of the end of the world is a very old profession.
  • There is no Planet X or Nibiru.
  • The Earth is not going to flip upside down in 2012, or anytime in the next several million years.
  • The Earth does undergo magnetic field reversals, but these are not instantaneous events. Saying that one will happen on a specific date, let alone in a specific year, is fallacious. These reversals happen every 400,000 years -- and life has lived on through each of them,
  • The Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012. The solar system is in fact dozens of light years away from the galactic plane.

Here is a good site regarding 2012:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

This thread is not a place to hawk a 2012 disaster theory. It is a place to debunk them. It is also a place to help placate the nerves of those who have have bought into or are concerned about the hype.

Any new threads on 2012 will either be merged into this thread, locked, or deleted.

the world isnt going to end what people are saying is something exsistance changing is going to happen. a catastrophic even that will change the course of history
