The "movement" is called VHEMT (Voluntary Human Extinction MovemenT.) They don't advocate suicide or murder, just the cessation of human breeding.

It seemed really radical when I first heard about it, but the more I look into it the more it makes sense. Screw all you want, just don't reproduce.

Q: What is the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement?

VHEMT (pronounced vehement) is a movement not an organization. It's a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We're not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.

We don't carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.

Rather, The Movement presents an encouraging alternative to the callous exploitation and wholesale destruction of Earth's ecology.

As VHEMT Volunteers know, the hopeful alternative to the extinction of millions of species of plants and animals is the voluntary extinction of one species: Homo sapiens... us.

Each time another one of us decides to not add another one of us to the burgeoning billions already squatting on this ravaged planet, another ray of hope shines through the gloom.

When every human chooses to stop breeding, Earth's biosphere will be allowed to return to its former glory, and all remaining creatures will be free to live, die, evolve (if they believe in evolution), and will perhaps pass away, as so many of Nature's "experiments" have done throughout the eons.

It's going to take all of us going.

What do you guys think about this?

I think all of the party members of this organization need to be jailed, all people who supported them need to be jailed, and every bank account frozen. Media representation of this organization in good light must be halted, information praising this movement must be destroyed, and anyone even closely associating themselves with need to have less people needs to be properly handled with.

We need to strive to expand into space and create colonies in space, we need to expand and create a large population of humans in this universe, we need to create a civilization massive and powerful.

The problem is that not everyone would conform leaving those who do breed to control everything.

I think it's marvelous.
Congrats on your new insight :)

I'm with CT on this one. I think humanity has committed some atrocities, but smart, responsible people should parent. I think "quitting" is the easy answer, but there's still a lot that can be fixed, and maybe improved by humanity. Change is needed, but voluntary extinction isn't the answer.

Brave new world ? No thanks..

What can humanity possibly improve but itself (in theory) ?

Change is needed, but voluntary extinction isn't the answer.
Why not ? It seems a pretty good answer to me.

We should all adopt China's one child policy, and/or Orson Scott Card's child monitoring policy.
If that's what you want to do to curb overpopulation.
Quite frankly, cut income inequality and you have one reason for overpopulation gone, without poverty there's no need to have so many kids.
Or is that too much to ask?

No, it's too little.
There is no reason for overpopulation as it is.
Even when people are not poor they will still have more than one kid on average.
I would agree with a global one-kid-per-couple policy because that would decrease the global population.

All who want babies should adopt until there are no more homeless children!

But apart from that, you need to somehow figure out why life will actually be better after an extreme population plummet.

It seems pretty obvious that nature would be better off without so many humans around..

Just call me Huxley. :p

I like humanity. Destroying something I actively work to improve while fools have more and more children seems very sad to me. It will take so long anyway, and we need intelligent people until humanity does fizzle out. Do you really want parents to primarily consist of morons?

There's so much to learn, that I think it's worth sticking around for. Besides, would you rather I be a parent, or Draq and whatever he marries doing the breeding? :p

And Search & Destroy, it's not that simple. There's a myriad of issues surrounding adoption legalities, adoptees, etc.

However, I agree it's irresponsible to want more than two.

I hate to break your heart, but the world won't last forever.

And I hate to do it, but I disagree with you. Everything is cyclical, every world gives birth to a new one. Every civilization passes on something to the next. Every human leaves a part of themselves embedded on children of the future. Even if that change is minuscule, it is still there.

The world will change and that will be so.

When the sun supernovas, I win.

The earth is not permanent. Get over it.

do you not see that even if this Earth will die someday we will have the power to create many thousands of such Earth's elsewhere?

The Sun will shine when we desire so.
And Universe will die and born again when we so wish.

It is not an end, it is a change, an evolution. Nothing is really created or destroyed, it just changes its state.

I don't. Humanity is a pest in its current form.
My problem with humanity is the sheer amount of people it consists of. If there were only, say, 500K people in the world, humanity could be fantastic.

While you are working to improve humanity you're at the same time contributing to the destruction something that need not be improved.

No, I just want FAR less parents.

There's so much to learn, that I think it's worth sticking around for.
Don't get me wrong, I like myself. I don't want to die, and I don't want anyone else to die (in general) either.
I want to learn about and experience the world for as long, and as much, as I can. But this is really beside the point.

Besides, would you rather I be a parent, or Draq and whatever he marries doing the breeding?
"whatever he marries" ? lol :D

Not that I pretend to know you, but from what I can gather you'd be a good parent.

However, I agree it's irresponsible to want more than two.
We agree at least somewhat then :)

It's called Hell.
