We are the same human,

No we are not you offtopic mofo. Go and fuck yourself twice before you come back and dare your offtopic bullshit. Start a new thread if you care about that that much. Oh yes, and die a painful death, hopefully shit poisoning...

Now, have I cleared up the board??

I find that the loudest gay bashers are often the ones later arrested for manning the glory hole in the men's room at the local airport.

Anybody want to take bets on arauca?

You are a real Son of a wore , you are discussing , you are promoting your own personality, you are sik.

"The reason for the decline in forum membership - anyone?"
The 6 pages it took to get to this point in this thread seems to be a self evident type answer!
It would seem that before too awful much longer, when I jump on this World Wide Waste...er, Web, it will be a choice of www.sciforums.com/ or www.godlikeproductions.com to enjoy entilleyjants deescutionsd !
Virtual Sheeple...HOPEFULLY will ALWAYS ACCEPT me as The Dumbest Man On Earth!!
My virtual identity is, I HOPE, Dumb enough to BET MY VIRTUAL LIFE SAVINGS that the majority of posters on this forum DO NOT, let me repeat DO NOT have a facebook page !!!!!!!
ERGO; being that I am indeed the Dumbest Man On Earth.... NOT ONE OTHER SINGLE POSTER ON THIS SITE SHOULD MISCONSTRUE MY MEANING!!!
,

It is painfully obvious why most online forums loose membership as displayed by all the off topic posting. but this is not the topic of the thread. The topic was about how it appeared that some members were attempting to silence discussion or censor the board into silence with their repeated esteem attacks upon members. The above off topic banter is typical of why threads are unproductive however this is a different issue to the OP's import.

Your gutter attitude hinder people to participate , Have you thought, your type of personality is a discouragement for participant to stay in this forum.

In my opnion if a moderator can't see the relevance of a post, that post should immediately and arbitarilly be moved to a forum where relevance is demanded before re-instatement. No questions asked no big deal, no esteem issues, just move them out of the thread so that the thread can continue rather than die like this one is about to.

Threads DiE when nobody pays it any attention. I think this is still ALIVE!!Egore!

One reason for forum decline, observed at another forum I frequent, is the loss of some of it's most dynamic posters.

The most viewed thread at another forum was simply titled 'An Idea.' This thread was the theory of everything of one person and they posted to their own thread daily over a number of years. They also allowed and entertained almost any topic that other posters raised yet always returned to their original contemplation of 'An Idea'. Once we lost this key member, (they passed on) the dynamics of the forum were visibly changed. Other members also were enduring changes in their health and personal life and so came less frequently to the forum.

It is very quiet there now and I stop by regularly, for old times sake, and lob in a few posts but there is little energy for me to work with. Even this forum has been holding my interest less than when I joined and I spend an equal amount of time on another. As it is summer here presently, I have more activities on the go and so less time overall for reading and posting on-line.

The off-topic problem and kidnapped agenda is only ever addressed by a thread holder who reports such posts every time and strictly polices their own thread, demanding accountability to the thread topic, thereby keeping moderators very busy and frequently running off their own participants in the process.

We are not particularly good communicators as a species, and we all perceive and convey matters quite differently. We seem to have a short attention span and our minds leap from thought to thought like the proverbial cat on a hot tin roof, much as I have allowed my own mind to do in this post. :D

The topic was about how it appeared that some members were attempting to silence discussion or censor the board into silence with their repeated esteem attacks upon members.

Those personal attacks and threats with formal sanctions are part of the discussion/debate itself.

Anyone can speak up about homosexuality/vegetarianism/Nazism/Semitism/the dubious aspects of science/any other potentially controversial topic.
Few are willing to still speak up for them in the face of threats to their own person.

And if one isn't really willing to speak up for them when faced with such threats, what's the point of speaking about those topics at all?

What exactly did you expect to happen here? Someone asked a question, and there were several responses, some more plausible than others. Facebook and Reddit and other social media sites do and will continue to take a toll on more traditional forums such as this. Some people brought up (myself included) the notion that moderators have on more than a few occasions abused their power and have often been the biggest instigators, but that's a dead-end road. Trust me, as someone who has complained a lot about the moderation here, nothing ever comes of it. I was told by one mod that I was no better than Anders Breivik, the psycho who killed like 80 civilians in Norway, for the "crime" of speaking out against Islam. James even agreed that the comment was insulting, but he didn't act on it. Moderators appear to be above the rules they enforce, and there's nothing we can do about it.

"The dubious aspects of science." You are beyond disingenuous, Wynn.

The reason for the decline in forum membership?

the black dread of course
a particularly virulent disease with gibbering idiocy as a common symptom

unfortunately one needs to work out whether it is the ball or the player that is the target. Sciforums is a community abeit an anonymous and virtual one. A self organising community that can, as most self organising communities do, revert to forms of Partriachal tribalism where those with the greatest success at destroying a person self-esteem wins.
But alas the win is only an illusion as it takes all those persons both witnesses and participants to make a community.
Yes there are guests who lurk in the back ground assessing whether to join this board or not and their opinon counts toward every ones future here at sciforums or any other public forum.
There are many places to enter into chat room grandures on the net, showing off who has the best style of attacking someone else in the hope to bring them to their knees but you know who really is getting down on their knees don't you and it is not just the offending poster(s)...

"tis ok...really 'tis ok... theres a quiet little spot over there for me to have little cry"
"I'll just place these pennies on your eyes and hope the pain will go away" lyrics - Steven - Alice Cooper*
*checked the lyrics and found my memory lacking... close but!

Having danced a few rounds with several of those posting on this thread, I must say that there is enough disingenuity to go around quite nicely. :)

Some of us have elevated trolling to a fine art, others are still rank amateur at that and cannot seem to improve, though that has not stopped them from posting up their criticisms of other members for reasons most spurious and personal.

I would blame the newer 'social media' for much of any noticeable nontransient decline in participation here, however. Many persons seem unable to abstain from the siren call to 'tweet' their bowel movements and advertize same on their Facebook wall....as they drive down the highway running over pedestrians.

Stoniphi,
You are not mentioning me are you.....
Oh, no!

Another one bites the dust...

(Trying to post an drive is hazardous. IMO)

ha and how many people do you see driving a facebooking at the same time... heaps!

I thought this forum holds the cards for numbers and variety, but one of the main turnoffs is the number of threads running under one topic, and the length of some threads. Its boring and people cannot be bothered sifting through it, let alone keeping track of their posts.

The solution is to encourage shorter posts, to the point,

The other problems are, that sciforums allows your name and comments to be listed publically on google for eg.

Also posts sometimes need editing or complete removal later on, which is not allowed. It is a one way street that leads into a maze.

And some of the moderators are too inexperienced in older forms of science like natural philosophy, and have little knowledge of alternatives like new age.

It would be interesting if the starter of a thread could delete and clean up that thread of unwanted posts.
