The history of sexism...where did it begin? Why? Can we rid our world of it?

Hey trooper ...I saw that earlier, thanks!

Yes, Greater...great points.

Interesting to note that many religious men are not intimidated by strong women as is sometimes commonly thought and that if a man is intimidated by a strong smart woman, that is really more his issue to deal with.

Interesting points in this video!

Hard to believe that in this day and age, women are still treated in some circles and professional situations as inferior to men.

arauca, that was a beautiful video. "A woman should illuminate the world." In Jewish culture, women are treated with dignity and respect I have noticed. On average, I've read that Jewish men treat their wives/significant others with greater respect than Christian men.

arauca, it is déjà vu talking with you in this thread, again. :D
They are not treated with dignity or with respect in all Jewish cultures.

A woman should illuminate the world... Only if she is sitting at the back of the bus.

I'd let you light up my world!

I prefer the dark, thanks.

Yeah, lil' wegsie has a lot to learn. Women are second-class citizens in all of the Abrahamic religions.
Pretty much. Don't even get me started on the other religions and the history of their sexist ideology that still plagues women and endangers their lives to this day.

The history of sexism began within evolution, when male and female differentiated for genetic diversity. Genetic diversity also meant gender assignments so each would express a range of the wider diversity. Religious and cultural precedent is based on this natural observation. Abortion is not natural in apes, if you assume we evolved from apes. We did not evolve from rats or bugs, right? Over the centuries males have made an attempt to keep the women natural and avoid the pitfalls of unnatural women on culture. The oldest civilization on earth is China, which is old school. Women liberation in America has raised costs and debt and threatens the stability of a once enduring culture. The extra cost is needed to created the illusion of equal via the dual standard.

Of course there are gender differences, but women are equal in personhood to men. Sexism is an attitude, a choice. It is a deliberate way of viewing women as 'less than,' or inferior. You might be interested to know wellwisher, that in some ancient civilizations...women were treated equally as men, in terms of daily responsibilities, etc. I will find an article to post about it.

Women don't wish to become 'like' men. We just don't want to be discriminated against, or treated as inferior to men.

Yes indeed. Women were cheaper to own when we kept them barefoot and at home using her washboard. Have you seen the price of shoes and purses. It is highway robbery I tell you.

Just a slight correction. Before man created weapons big enough to kill each other with, the Bronze Age, most ancient communities were matriarchies and no strong fortifications were required which indicates that man did not war against man.

If men actually thought things out, they would recognize that women are better suited to peaceful co-existence than men, ---- thanks to their mothering instincts, ---- as they are the gatherers who, metaphorically speaking, collect us and keep us at peace in their collection basket, --- as compared to man the hunter who just knows how to kill.

Christ, men can't think further than their eh ----------

Wow...I stand corrected. It's just unreal to me that women are still fighting for basic rights, that men have, in some cultures.

The right wings of all religions belong in BCE not CE.

They are a small but harmful bunch.

Of course, I’m going to agree with Kate Smurthwaite.

You’re hilarious, Bells.

Aren't you a lawyer? If you practiced family law in the states, you’d be highly sought-after. You’d make one hell of a divorce attorney, that's for sure.

"Indeed, it is safe to say that religion would have long ceased to be a factor in the lives of the people, if it were not for the support it receives from women. The most ardent church workers, the most tireless missionaries the world over, are women, always sacrificing on the altar of the gods that have chained her spirit and enslaved her body.” ~Emma Goldman

I am a lawyer, yes. Divorce.. I could barely cope with my own. I don't wish to cope with others.

A correct quote.

From the story of Lilith, it is about the subservient place of women. She must bow. She must know her place. And she must be thankful to God for it. And they idealise Mary, because she was accepting, she will go to heaven. So of course women are going to try to follow that ideal.

As your video states, Mary is the ideal, because she completely opened herself to God, a virginal sacrifice. This is the ideal.

And it is appalling.

Ms Smurthwaite makes a very valid point. Religion is a tool that allows men to control women, from their bodies and reproduction choices to how they live their lives and if women refuse, then they become Lilith. And it is ingrained into the mind of girls from a very young age. First communion, in the Catholic Church for example, where little girls are dressed like virginal brides, some even wear veils, to take the 'body of Christ' - their first time. How twisted is that? And women not only allow it, but encourage it and support it and keep those traditions going.

They know their place and they expect to have that place.

Ugh... Must not get into this..

So well said, Bells. And I love that quote, Trooper.

Yes, when I was following Christianity, it wasn’t enough to just ‘accept’ that being submissive to men is the ‘will of God’…but, as a woman, I should yearn to find joy in it, as well. Now, over the years as I spent time in different religious circles, I have heard submissiveness described in a variety of ways, as to appear favorable to women, but at the end of the day, I never found it to be. Certainly not all men who are religious share these views, but many religious men do.
