The history of sexism...where did it begin? Why? Can we rid our world of it?

So well said, Bells. And I love that quote, Trooper.

Yes, when I was following Christianity, it wasn’t enough to just ‘accept’ that being submissive to men is the ‘will of God’…but, as a woman, I should yearn to find joy in it, as well. Now, over the years as I spent time in different religious circles, I have heard submissiveness described in a variety of ways, as to appear favorable to women, but at the end of the day, I never found it to be. Certainly not all men who are religious share these views, but many religious men do.
I shouldn't have watched the video, that Trooper linked, to the end.

One of the women, a woman who was there representing the Catholic Church, commented that contraception was bad for women because it made women more available to men.

I face palmed.

The onus remains on the woman. So much so that their control over their own uterus is seen as detrimental. That it allows them to become available to men. That God got an unwed minor pregnant after putting her to sleep, that wasn't Mary being available to men. Oh no. That is the ideal. If a man did that in today's society, he would be jailed for rape and child abuse. And yet, Abrahamic religions hold this as being an ideal for women. Not her having a choice, no, that's bad. It is up to men to decide her fate and women have so grown accustomed to it that they come out with statements like that moron on the video.

The true ideal for some is the control of women's reproductive rights as well as their rights to live freely in society. That is the basis of sexism in history and it continues today. Women must know and mind their place and remember who is in control.

That is a new one for me I am promoting to treat the respectfully and you are telling me this is disrespectful.

The issue is expecting women to "act like ladies" rather than as just acting like responsible people. The meme "women should act like ladies" has been an excuse used for centuries to keep women in their place. Women should not be the head of the household; they should act like ladies and defer to their husbands. Women should not be assertive; they should act like ladies and let men make the tough decisions. Women should not speak up for themselves; they should act like ladies and be demure.

I treat my wife as a lady you treat her your American way , take her to a male bar and speak foul at home so she will be treated as a guy.

I do treat most women I meet like guys. That does not mean "take her to a male bar and speak foul." It means being courteous to them, respecting their wishes, treating them as I wish to be treated etc.

The problem is not treating women well or poorly; the problem is treating them like women, not like people.

A lady is a woman that knows how to cook take care of the house be a mother , be polite , not foul mouth, be the backbone of the husband, and of course don' have to many headackes in the month, life will be beautiful.
If she have a job , the man should help here with the daily house work

And a gentleman doesn't cook, take care of the house, be a father, be polite, not have a foul mouth, be the backbone of the wife, and help to make her comfortable when she's having headaches and monthly discomfort?

Unless you can find equality in the way they each fit some prescribed definition of behavior, then you might be leaning a little to the sexist side of the equation. With all due respect you're grounded in the last century, which was largely based on the older almost Victorian view of womanly duties.

But flip to all of the women who are not living with men (regardless of sexual orientation) and you'd still allow that they can be ladies too -- or maybe we should just say decent people and not get stuck on the older model. Surely these single women wouldn't have to meet any of those goals to be the kind of person you would love to have as a close friend (esp in the strictly platonic sense), someone you would admire and respect, right?

But I'd let go of the foul mouth idea. That muzzle is way too Victorian. Let her be herself, and most of all get out of her way. Because she's doing 90 right now about to run you off the road, and she's not going back to that rocking chair and that knitting needle. At least not unless that's what she wants.

I would just define sexism as interfering with her capacity to be herself. She's a human being, fer cryin out loud. Leave her alone (not meaning abandonment, but being supportive). And, of course, get off the gas. We're about 50 years after the era when women's rights went mainstream, so this has all been hammered out long ago.

A lady is a woman that knows how to cook take care of the house be a mother , be polite , not foul mouth, be the backbone of the husband, and of course don' have to many headackes in the month, life will be beautiful.

And an upstanding man is one who knows how to cook, how to take care of the house, be a father, be polite, not have a foul mouth, be the backbone of the wife, and of course doesn't have too many excuses throughout the month.

It's great to have high expectations of people. But when you have different expectations of men than of women - that's sexism.

If she have a job , the man should help here with the daily house work

So your assumption is that she should do all the housework unless she has a job?

I seldom swear but ----Fuck equality. If I had to eat my wife's cooking I would be as skinny as a rake. Her pucks do no compare to my tender victuals.

I put women above me always but not in my kitchen.

I suppose she is you cleaning lady.

I suppose she is you cleaning lady.

She certainly knows how to wash me up and wring me out but she is whatever she wishes to be in our relationship.

We both give and we both take and so far the scale is steady.

She is rather demanding in the bedroom but I bite the bullet and grit my teach and take the view that what does not kill me makes me strong.

I have to show patience with her as when a man is as, eh,---- manly as I, --- I have to allow concessions.

It's shocking how much religion gets away with as it relates to shaming people, especially in the area of sexuality. The RCC teaches that sex should be ordered to always being open to life. So, it can never just be about two people having pleasure for pleasure's sake. This idea that sex is dirty and immoral if it's performed outside of that context has done little more than create shameful attitudes towards sex. But when a bunch of pent up, misogynistic clergy men came up with these "rules," they figured...if we are miserable, everyone should be. :D

Too much information there, mister.
Glad you are in a happy relationship, though. :)

Soul mate is just where we begin.

The cooking part was true.

The rest, welllll, I might have exaggerated just a smidge.

I did what the churches do when speaking of their Gods. It is not quite you know ---- true.

But like them, I will never say I lied outright. It is that everyone else just does not understand.

Ah, here we have it!

A perfect example of sexism..

Thank you Arauca, for showing us exactly what sexism and misogyny looks like in its pure idiotic form.

Sadly, I don't think arauca finds anything wrong with this way of thinking. I don't think arauca believes sexism exists, if memory serves me correctly as it relates to some of his other earlier posts in this thread. We went round and round...billvon had the patience of a saint. :D

I've always been interested in archaeology news, and such...and have another thread whereby I posted this...thought it was worth sharing here.

The Paleolithic period was likely the most gender-equal time in history.

"Anthropologists have typically assumed that in Paleolithic societies, women were responsible for gathering wild plants and firewood, and men were responsible for hunting and scavenging dead animals. However, analogies to existent hunter-gatherer societies such as the Hadza people and the Australian aborigines suggest that the sexual division of labor in the Paleolithic was relatively flexible. Men may have participated in gathering plants, firewood and insects, and women may have procured small game animals for consumption and assisted men in driving herds of large game animals (such as woolly mammoths and deer) off cliffs. Additionally, recent research by anthropologist and archaeologist Steven Kuhn from the University of Arizona shows that this division of labor did not exist prior to the Upper Paleolithic and was invented relatively recently in human pre-history. Sexual division of labor may have been developed to allow humans to acquire food and other resources more efficiently. Possibly there was approximate parity between men and women during the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, and that period may have been the most gender-equal time in human history. Archeological evidence from art and funerary rituals indicates that a number of individual women enjoyed seemingly high status in their communities, and it is likely that both sexes participated in decision making. The earliest known Paleolithic shaman (c. 30,000 BP) was female. Jared Diamond suggests that the status of women declined with the adoption of agriculture because women in farming societies typically have more pregnancies and are expected to do more demanding work than women in hunter-gatherer societies. Like most contemporary hunter-gatherer societies, Paleolithic and the Mesolithic groups probably followed mostly matrilineal and ambilineal descent patterns; patrilineal descent patterns were probably rarer than in the following Neolithic period."

Things that make ya go hmmmm! ;)
