Does Spanking lower IQ points or are people with lower IQ points more likely to assault their children?

Spanking May Lower Kids' IQs
The bad news is that youngsters who are spanked might lose IQ points.

The good news is that it appears that children's IQs are on the rise -- and at least one expert believes that part of the reason why is that corporal punishment is falling out of favor in the United States and elsewhere.

That's the view of discipline and domestic violence expert Murray Straus, a professor of sociology and co-director of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire. Straus was scheduled to present the findings from recent research on spanking on Friday at the International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego.

The results of a survey of more than 17,000 university students from 32 countries "show that the higher the percent of parents who used corporal punishment, the lower the national average IQ," Straus wrote in his presentation.

In looking at spanking just in the United States, Straus and a fellow researcher reviewed data on IQ scores from 806 children between 2 and 4 years old and another 704 kids aged 5 to 9.

When their IQs were tested again four years later, children in the younger group who were not spanked scored five points higher, on average, than did children who had been spanked. In the group of older children, spanking resulted in an average loss of 2.8 points....

Correlation perhaps, but not causation. Like saying does the more fast food restaurants in a country lead to more nuclear weapons being built? It is true however that countries with the most nuclear weapons also have the most fast food restaurants, but are fast food restaurants the cause?

This could explain a lot.

My dad whipped my ass when I was a kid. Worse, was waiting for it after my mom would say "just wait to your father gets home".

What does that have to do with how well you take a test?

It was a joke to explain why I am so damn stupid. LOL.

I don't put to much faith into some of these studies. There will be another that comes along and says the opposite.

So they take one study and then think this statement is valid.

It may also be the reason kids seem to be a lot worse behaved and need to be put on Ritalin just to make it through the day.

I could think of a lot of reasons that IQ's could be going up, to spank or not to spank wouldn't even be on the list.

Neither case is demonstrably true, and your equating of "spanking" with "assaulting" makes the topic hardly addressable. The studies may seem to indicate that spanking lowers children's IQ points, but there is no biological validation for such a trend. In fact, the studies could just as well mean children with lower IQ points are more likely to be spanked, which is the most logical explanation for the IQ disparity between children who have and have not been spanked.

Here we go again with the occasional spank being turned into assaulting your children.

Overall, I think it is just another BULLSHIT study.

This makes sense to me, my Dad spanked me for bad grades and they only got worse. The stress is not good for learning, or a happy family life.

That is correct .
Every day we get a new study just to make psychologists rich .
Psychology is a business and as a business psychologists are only interested in money .

It has now been found that spanking makes your kid stupid, will turn them into a violent criminal, will cause sexual dysfunction, causes unhealthy sexual fetishes...etc. (I'm sure there is more).

There are presidents and prime ministers and army generals who were spanked by their loving and caring parents . Psychology is a business and the focus is to distort the truth just to benefit .

:bugeye: What? You mean spanking doesn't turn all children into stupid violent criminals with shady sexual fetishes? How can science be wrong? :p

so you think this study was made up for profit?

Psychologists are useless and they interfere in schools, families....etc . I am sure the world was happier before all these psychology theories .
What on earth can a psychologist tell a person that parents can not tell him or tell her . Yes and yes some presidents, prime ministers, army generals were spanked by their parents and they turned to be strong leaders and not squeegee kids and spoiled and rotten !!!.
