Legalize the C word!

I've never understood, in my nine years and three hundred fifty-three days here, what is so hard for people to understand about how to be insulting, or how to be profane, or what the idea of general decency means. And I can probably spend another 3,641 days at Sciforums and still not get it.

Is that a hint ? :D

Again Tiassa the limit would be what exactly? Varda may have gone beyond the boundary of her warning by bringing up the issue in a thread but to make a word so important its worth an 'instant ban' is silly its even sillier to say that all those who used the word were directing them at someone AS AN INSULT when you know this is simply not true. The thread was benign and so was the use of the word.

I don't get why you guys are so hung up on trying to make C**T an everyday word.

I don't know, but I don't fling words like that around on an everyday basis. How would you feel if your kids spoke like that?

Were you all brought up in households where you could curse and swear without consequence? Or you just figure now that you are adults anything goes?

Even though you don't find it offensive I bet there are a hell of a lot of ppl who do. I for one HATE! the word. If someone called me C**T I would find that highly offensive. Most women I know, feel the same way.

James makes a point........Why do you guys act stupid like you don't know that some find that word offensive and being called a Whiny C**T very insulting and uncalled for. Since I have been a member here I have been aware that calling someone that, especially repeatedly warranted a ban.

Who was called a cunt? Varda wasn't banned for using the term she was warned so the 'instant ban' was not applied was it? She was banned for bringing up the warning over the term in another thread. And the rest of us banned for using the term, I didn't direct it to anyone specifically and neither did anyone else so where is the offense and who was offended?

How often do you see it used here on the forums? I mean really.

I see Varda calling the members here that quite a bit.

She referred to the Sciforum Members as Whiny C**Ts a few times, and
specific members too. She knows that isn't permitted but just wanted to push some more buttons and start a thread about it.

Why would you want to be part of a forum of Whiny C**Ts anyway?

Well if she has been using the term 'quite a bit' then how was she to know that there was something wrong with the term if she wasn't warned and wasn't banned for it? Again she wasn't banned for using the term.

Well considering she has been a member here for quite a while longer then myself........It has been noted numerous times that calling ppl C**TS is not allowed.
I would bet she has been warned before this incident too.

The Stupid Act... I never knew Act isn't flying with me.

How is it not allowed if she's been using it 'quite a bit' without warning or ban? It must be a arbitrary then like all rules are arbitrary. Plazma said that the word was only ban worthy if directed towards someone. Well she wasn't banned but warned, we were not warned but banned but none of us had directed the term to anyone specifically:shrug:

So I reiterate that the ban had nothing whatsoever to do with the use of the word.

Put it this way.............If you are warned about calling ppl an offensive word or posting something offensive . You don't turn around and make a thread using the word and then start posting post after post using the word over and over and over.

I think it is just common sense that you will more then likely get banned.

I got banned for posting a cartoon I drew. The ban said posting pornographic material.

Even though it was of stick men and it was joke, I didn't post it again. Why? ummm because I knew I would just get banned again....common sense.

All Varda did was just try and mock James for the warning. If we all went ahead and just kept posting the same material after being warned and nothing happened what would be the point of Mods handing out warnings.

I have been warned a few times. Sometimes I let it go and sometimes I don't listen and just go ahead and do what I want again. I know that if I keep going on about something they warned me about, there is a good chance they will ban me next time.

Again........The Stupid Routine, I don't know what I did, isn't flying.

But she didn't use it 'over and over' she probably used it once.

So she was banned for 'mocking james'! Ah okay so you agree with me that it had absolutely nothing to do with the term 'cunt' but daring to mock James. So why was there a ban for obscenity? I mean a ban given should be specific to the offense right? So again the ban had nothing to do with 'offensive language' otherwise she would have had been issued an instant ban. The rest didn't mock james they just used the word and not in a ban worthy way.

So now there is a new category of offense which has to do with the mocking of mods. I mean let's get it all straight right?

Yes it had to do with the offensive language. If you don't see that I can't help ya.

James can waste him time, going over the whole thing again. I don't see why though,
it's pretty clear.

You are not making any sense. Plazma said specifically that the use of the word was ban worthy only when directed towards a member. Read his post he didn't say that those terms were offensive language in and of themselves. She wasn't banned for directing the term towards a member but warned, everyone else was banned for using the term and not warned but it wasn't directed towards any member.

You were the one who said she was 'mocking james' I can only deduce that she was banned for mocking james and not using the term.

So is it arbitrary or not? I think the rules have always been arbitrary so don't now come along and say 'its a given' there is nothing 'given' about this. You yourself said she uses the term 'quite a bit' so if this is the case how could she see it as on offensive term if she's allowed to use it 'quite a bit'?

If you can't see the inconsistency in this then it is I who cannot help you.

Its also the reason why I don't pay any attention to what the rules are or are not as it doesn't really matter, they will be doled out willy nilly as they have always been doled out, in short there are no 'hard and fast' rules.

The agreement you clicked "ok" to when you signed up (and you DID agree to this, as it has not changed for the entire existence of sciforums) says:

"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

Wow, is that what I agreed to? But seriously, you can't expect people to read the agreement, it's as long as Homer's iliad, people instinctively click "Agree" when they see those infamous bodies of text when registering. The agreement could have said "By registering to this site you just put a hit on your own mother, faggot" and we would have all agreed, oblivious to the fact that our mothers were soon going to be killed.

You can say fuck, cock, shit, cunt, etc. as long as these words aren't used to describe other SciForums member.

What if you use those words as compliments like "your muscles are as hard as cock, you've been working out?" or "she is as beautiful as a cunt (cunt meaning vagina, of course)" or "you smell like anything but shit" etc.

So your point would be "I'm too lazy/ inept/ dilatory to check what I'm agreeing to before I actually click "I agree"?
How smart does that make you feel?

"Duh, well of course I clicked on the "agree" button, but I didn't really mean it... You can't blame me for for being dumb, it's the way I was brought up"

She was warned for calling people "whiney cunts" and then she decided to test the warning by using it repeatedly when she knew that she had just been warned. She may not have been calling someone a cunt directly, but surely you understand (as does everyone else) the spirit of what she did.

And she's used the word derogatorily in at least 5 other threads, and it's not her first ban for insulting other people. She's been banned before for insulting people, maybe not with the word but it's the spirit in which she does things that has also earned her some ire. She even called one of Shorty's kids a cunt.

Surely there are other ways to go about insulting people without resorting to obscenties, we do it all the time around here which is what Tiassa is getting at. Roman got banned for nearly the same thing. It's not just the words, but the spirit behind the words and the repeated testing of the powers that be in that regard. Both of them always push the envelope to see what they can get away with. I'm all for the outlaw, don't get me wrong. I love the smell, sounds and effect of TNT... but it needs to be done with class or it's all just smoke and noise.

Correction: Varda was banned for use of the word, but you're missing the context.
She'd already received a warning for its use and then she was "smart" enough to start a thread with the word in the title* and continue.
And then several people joined in and simply repeated the word for the sheer bloody pettiness of it.
Following THAT we got yet another thread about the word.

Bart Simpson's trip back from Church springs to mind "They told us about HELL today, so saying HELL is okay. It looks like HELL out there..."
Vaguely amusing in a cartoon 12(?) year old, but hardly any where else.
No wonder the words "Intelligent Community" have been dropped from the logo.

Diamond Hearts and S.A.M. had the right idea.
I'm gone...

* Remember the comments about having "wanker" in a thread title?
