Eating a 100% balanced diet is impossible. Like my grandfather used to say when he mixed strange foods together. "It all goes to the same place anyway". Just because you dip your carrots in ranch does not take the nutrients away from the carrot. I think it's better than no carrot at all.
What does your grandfather's saying have to do with a balanced diet?
Anyway... "balance" depends on the definition you want to use. Balance of macronutrients? Balance of micronutrients?
Making a balance of either one of the two choices I gave is possible... but trying to balance out both at the same time is nearly impossible. It's best to balance out the macronutrients on a day-to-day basis and then cover the micronutrients over the course of a week by varying the foods.
But then again... balance for one person might be imbalance for another... so there is no one-size-fits-all in terms of day to day food choices. If you're an athlete you will need a high protein and high carb diet. If you are a lazy slob, you'll need low calories, low carbs, and moderate fats and moderate protein.
As for my intake, I gorge on high fat and high protein. Carbs make me feel sick when I don't need them.
You can't force your kids to eat what they don't want to
