So I can't spell, at least Im not trying to find love on some "stupid" thread. I may be 15, but don't question my capabilities, I'm intelligent and I'm becoming intellectual, maybe when I am able to spell it right I'll be able to self proclaim that I am an intellectual.

Ermmm who's trying to find love on here?

And as for becoming an intellectual when you're able to spell the word, ermmm no. You don't become an intellectual because you set out to. You become an intellectual when you have the knowledge and the ability to converse with others in an intelligent manner on subjects which are wide and varied. Being able to spell correctly does not make anyone an intellectual. It only means that you have a good memory and are able to remember the structure of the word and their meanings.

And you should always question your capabilities as if you don't question yourself and your knowledge, you won't know when you need to improve yourself or better yourself. How can you judge yourself if you don't question yourself?

I meet intelectualls once in a while and it is not so much that they have intelligent conversations, it is more that they are trained to talk on certain topics in a certain style. It is a culture.

I had some training and I can have an intellectual discussion if I had too, but prefer not to.

Intelectuals are often more prevalent in families in which one or both parents are Professors. It helps when you learn to behave like an intelectual from an early age on.

high intelligence is not required to become intellectual. The biggest factor to become intellectual is to gain knowledge. You see a lot of people of people dont have an extremely high IQ, and to be intellectual means to have knowledge and think rationally. Going back to my intelligence I know i'm gifted in it, and its going to take time for me to use it in fully, until I gain more knowlege.

Oh and Bells it was a joke..........

it actually means to have limited knowledge on a subject of which most people have no knowledge.

Rational thinking is not a required characterists. There are and were many irrational intellectuals.

Spurious Monkey

Why don't you try looking up the word intellectual spruious monkey. Intellectual has a definition, I think that you might have labeled the individual intellectual maybe based on his/her intelligence. I think to be irrational is usually a result of emotions and spirit of the person.

do not poke the monkey.

this monkey is spurious and quite bright.

you might consider his words have more value than you credit them.

i'd suggest you employ your budding intellect to contemplate his words before scoffage.

True, but you'd still need to have some knowledge of what you are discussing though. Style is one thing but if you have no idea of what the issues are then style will not save you. Any person is able of having an intellectual discussion, as long as that person has an idea of the topic at hand. And you are correct in that many intellectuals have parents who are intellectuals themselves and therefore they were taught to communicate in a manner that is similar to their parents.

just for bells.

edit: the part in red I actually added just now and was not part of the original statement.

And a quick reminder that intellectuals make their own rules on knowledge:
For instance if you are a postmodern intellectual you actually do not require any knowledge on any subject. In fact, it will hinder you in a fullfilling (empty) postmodern intellectual debate.

(empty refers to my evaluation of the nature of such a debate.)

Some intellectual debates are per definition not based on 'having' knowledge and usually we refer to them as political. Although knowledge can be used to strengthen your own point of view or to weaken the opponent. This however is not quite the same as 'being knowledgable' since any knowledge can be used in this manner, even, or especially knowledge out of its context.

ItalianItellectual

Sorry but really ppl should realize that you are an intellectually gifted person, you shouldn't have to tell us. That indicates low self-confidence in your abilities, and it shows a level of pretentiousness. Really ... its kind of pathetic if you ask me, its like when someone has to tell you that they are popular...prove it, don't claim it.

nico

Well yes in this case I would have to claim, because we are communicating one idea at a time on this thread. Like Wes Morris thinks Spurious Monkey is intelligent, and I think he's a moron (no offense) only because what I have heard from him is so limited due to the circumstances that we can only type so much before people just stop reading your post. I would love to for the Monkey Man to explain to me his thoughts, because he could perhaps teach me something. So Nico, I did have to claim it due to the fact that it would take maybe a month of having this thread up to be the equivalent to a complete conversation. I would agree with you nico in reality, that I would never call myself intelligent, because I could give them a chance to find out for themselves, but in here its hard to do that.

hey italianintellectual.

you a good kid. *pats back*

you're a little off about that whole "hard to do it here thing". it's just different is all. it maybe takes a little longer to assess someone's personality here than IRL, but you still get the gist of it.

i forgot to mention:

welcome to sciforums. :)

That's funny coming from a kid who has devoted at least one thread to his pathetic sense of superiority over others.

i think you should change your name, because YOUR stupid!

......

As well as the everyone making a big deal about a typo....

I mean, do you think he spelled it "itellectual" because he doesn't know how to spell or because it's just a typo.....

Amusing what people will dwell on for a little boost in esteem.....

The internet is awe-inspiring!

But who ARE the intellectuals?!

From what I've seen forums are compirsed of mostly vociferous doctrinaires....

Then again...I have been in the Religion and Philosophy section far too many times....
