Donating to the poor, helping animals, being nice to old people. Isn't that kind of an equivalent to stuffing the poorbox in an act of conscience? You know, the Catholic church tried that sort of thing before. It was called indulgence.

But being nice to someone tomorrow doesn't change the fact of a cruelty committed—and enjoyed—today. People can appease their consciences all they want, but sometimes it is simply better and easier to not undertake such moral burdens in the first place.
