Corona Virus 2019-nCoV

Derrr, really, genius? Gee, I din't know that.

What do you suppose I meant when I said that it was not so much about "the economy, as such?"

Again, learn how to read.
It's frequently hard to determine what you mean in one of your ignorant, angry rants.

Your point, to the extent that you had one, was that shutting down the country has potentially important unintended consequences. Yes, we all get that. That's why this is a difficult problem.

The heavy handed approach was made necessary by doing nothing until the last minute thereby overwhelming the capacity of our medical system.

Maybe put down the beer, angry man, for a minute?

True. Upon further reflection, we will probably all be dead in a year or so.

Can you show me where anyone suggested that we'll "all be dead?"

Maybe you need to put down the crack pipe.

Also, learn how to read. And learn the function of square quotes, while you're at it.

You really can't read, can you?

The post to which, apparently, you were... responding? (who knows?) posed a question--there was no "point" that I was making. Specifically, this:
I am curious as to how much thought/research has been devoted to matters of collateral damage as a consequence of disruption. ...
Anyone know of any data or hypothesizing on this?

You can see that, right?

It's called sarcasm. It's an appropriate response to Quantum Quack's "the sky is falling" talk.

I think we can both agree that there is no point to much of what you rant about.

The current growth rate of cases is about 100,00 every 24 hours
We just hit the 600,000 mark a few moments ago.
It wont be just the hospital systems around the globe but also the stat collection that will be over whelmed. Soon it will be 600,000 per day.

The world is currently officially declared as in recession according to SBS TV.

It is you that interprets the sky is falling not me...
I think the COVID and climate change issues are enough to worry about with out adding your sky is falling issue...lol

You had a post talking about the "endtimes". That qualifies as "the sky is falling" to me.

A recession isn't something unheard of and in this case it's simply caused by everyone staying home. When everyone goes back to work...no more recession.

The coronavirus is a problem. Let's not make it out to be more than it is. The main problem is the exponential infection rate which causes it to overwhelm our hospitals.

Slow that down and learn a bit more about it and it won't be such a problem next time around.

Perhaps your level of comprehension is inadequate...
What I have been posting quite often is that if humanity fails to reign in AGW we may very well have to live in hermetically sealed self contained cities. I also go on to say that if we do not prepare ourselves humanity may not survive at all.

It is a bit like what is happening in the USA at the moment. A lack of preparedness due to leadership folly, an inability to learn from past mistakes, may very well lead to the end of the USA as a union of states. Is that end times enough for you?

You see the 2 billion usd stimulus package will not stop the COVID spreading... only people can do that and now that Trump and his supporters want to restart the USA you guys haven't a hope of containing this thing. You're going to be chasing your tail for over 3 years at the least before sufficient vaccine (if ever available) is employed.

As bad if not worse than the recession of 2009 with unemployment figures that would make a great depression (1930's) survivor blush.

and kill and disable an awful lot of people in the process..
It will over whelm your hospital systems, probably for months as is the case in Italy and Spain.. It is almost a certainty, barring a miracle. If Italy or Spain are any indication by September there will not be much economy nor health system to save...
But of course I forget about India, Indonesia, Turkey and Russia and how global resources will be significantly directed towards them instead of the USA once their curves are fully started as they appear to be doing right now.

Slow that down and learn a bit more about it and it won't be such a problem next time around.
The USA has failed to learn so far . What makes you think it will learn now?

President Donald Trump’s latest target, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, told a radio station Friday that medical supply vendors informed her they’ve been told “not to send stuff” to her state amid the battle against COVID-19. ...

Whitmer told WWJ: “When the federal government told us that we needed to go it ourselves [on medical supplies], we started procuring every item we could get our hands on. But what I’ve gotten back is that vendors with whom we had contracts are now being told not to send stuff here to Michigan.” ...

Trump’s willingness to punish a state’s residents amid a pandemic over a feud with a governor appeared evident in a statement at his press briefing Friday. The president said he had instructed Vice President Mike Pence, who heads up the president’s coronavirus task force, not to call the governors of Washington or Michigan. The two states have among the highest number of coronavirus cases in the nation, and Michigan is experiencing a dramatic spike in cases from 350 a week ago to nearly 3,000 Friday.

“I say, ‘Mike, don’t call ... the woman in Michigan. It doesn’t make any difference what happens,’” Trump said.

Again, if anyone can be said to be truly "deserving" of execution (for treason?), it would most definitely be Trump.

Tragic , to the extreme .

What this Virus has exposed to the American People is the In-Humanity of the President . And his Cronies .

Criminal negligence? Perhaps. But demonstrating treason requires showing a concerted effort to betray the country - not just promote oneself without regard for the country.

Yeah, treason is quite difficult to establish. Wasn't Tokyo Rose the last person convicted for treason against the U.S.? That's a pretty high--and unusual--bar.

Yes, I guess my comprehension is inadequate.

Where is the CDC?
Why is it apparently silent?
Why aren't people demanding to know why the CDC appears to MIA ?
An article worth a read if wanted:
https://www.npr.org/sections/health...is-heats-up-why-arent-we-hearing-from-the-cdc
My guess is that the models they are using demonstrate a future that the Trump administration do not want to get into.
Essentially the CDC are not prepared to lie to the American peoples.
Further I would guess that they will eventually get more publicly involved when lying is no longer an option.

Thoughts any one?

According to Russian media headlines Moscow goes into effective lock down March 30th. People are ordered to stay home with few exceptions.
Russian media appears to be dominated by COVID articles.

Russia has reported :
1534 confirmed cases
8 deaths
Notes:
Transparency is of concern.
Testing has only started so under reporting may be significant.

USA has reported :
142,224 confirmed cases
2485 Deaths
Testing levels are gaining momentum.

India has reported :
1024 confirmed cases
27 Deaths
Notes:
Severely chaotic situation.
Testing results uncertain.
Potentially massive community transmission
Check date : 14th-04-2020 (14 day incubation)

I was just watching a live YouTube channel (not official Russian media) from a local Russian guy. He says that the shut-down is just for one week (with pay) and that it is recommended that people stay inside but there is no order to do so.

Some people are out and about but most are staying inside. Non-essential businesses are closed for one week.

hmmm...
Had a deeper look see and found this at the Moscow times ( English )

Moscow will enact an indefinite citywide quarantine starting Monday, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said as the city's number of coronavirus cases surpassed 1,000 over the weekend.

The self-isolation order will apply to all residents regardless of age.

According to the decree, Moscow residents will only be allowed to leave their homes for:

  • Emergency medical care;
  • Traveling to work if one is unable to work remotely;
  • Going to the nearest grocery store or pharmacy;
  • Walking pets within a 100-meter radius from their residence;
  • Taking out the garbage.

People who leave their homes are ordered to maintain at least a 1.5-meter distance between themselves and othe
rs.

It does not mention business shutdowns except to imply that if one complies with the order most retail other than essential will have no customers.
It doesn't mention how strict this will be enforced either, but hey this is Moscow...

The guy with the broadcast was also not in Moscow. He was still in a biggest city but it was not Moscow so he was talking about Putin's suggestions, countrywide suggestions but there was nothing more specific for that particular city.
