Atheism is a belief.

I know how to use a dictionary.

Seems a rather silly question.

Disbelief in anything could be classed as a belief.

If you don't beleive in the bogey man, you beleive he doesn't exist.

There are things I do not believe in that I have never thought about, never even heard of.

On the other hand if I have spend time reasoning around a certain issue and come to a conclusion that is a different kettle of bogeymen.

Well Gy - the door's always open and the kettle's always on. You're welcome here anytime - Jesse. :)

Sounds good. I'll bring some 'Dragon Well'. :)

Oh, the short form I use is 'T1G!' or 't1g' - Just FYI
But, no biggie.

G'morning T1G!

Thanks, I'll remember. I too don't like to be mispronounced. I'm addressed as 'Jessie' or 'Jessica' often, and for reasons unclear to me I intensely dislike it. My real name is Jesse and the only short form I use (generally with close friends) is Jess. Weird what bothers us, isn't it? I'm not easy to irritate, but that seems to do it.

I meant it about the visit. You can't go anywhere from here unless you want to climb over the next mountain - bad idea! LOL! So, we're always ready for some wayfaring stranger to drop by for a day or two. It's a long and dangerous drive to get here so most folks who aren't familiar with the 'road' need a couple of days to stop shaking! :roflmao:

The first time I drove that road, years ago, when it was substantially worse than it is today, I had our youngest child with me - she was only five then - and I was sure I was going to kill us both. After three hours of driving on a road that was (literally) moving in front of me, with a high rock face on the passenger side and a thousand foot drop into a glacier lake on my side, I stopped the car and broke down and cried. I've driven in unbelievable conditions on this planet, but only one other place scared me as much as my introduction to our logging 'road' here - and that was Independence Pass in Aspen, Colorado. (We used to live there.) That doesn't bother me anymore either, but the first time I did it, well... you know what they say, first you say it and then you do it!

There's a poem in a naturopath's office in Aspen entitled The Ambulance Down In the Valley. John Denver used to get a kick out of it too and sometimes recited it on stage when he toured. I'll see if I can find it for you - it's entertaining. :)

Well, back to work I go.

Have a sweet and peaceful night - Jesse.
P.S. How d'you get the '1' in your shortform to go little like that?

That's kind of cheap, honestly. Not believing in God isn't a belief in the way that believing in God is a belief.

I was told that God existed. I saw no evidence. I never believed in it.

VERY late to this thread... *sorry*

BUT... the OP is one of the most idiotic pieces of text I have ever had the misfortune to read. You are all getting far too bogged down in semantics...

Atheism is not a belief but an ABSENCE of belief (in at least one God). Nothing more, nothing less.

Atheists can still be religious or philosophers or scientists and none of this makes any difference to the fact that they don't believe in God.

Agnosticism is a type of Atheism.

An absence of belief denotes a brainless existence. You'd have to lack the concept to lack belief.

I bet you don't get that either.

A brainless existence? Atheism doesn't mean that you don't believe in anything at all, SIMPLY that you don't believe in any God(s).

Oh and one more thing -

- fuck off you patronising moron.

So what exactly is it you don't believe in? Do you have a concept you don't believe in, or do you just not believe? Absence of belief is a ridiculous concept, completely illogical. It does not exist.

Very rational response there.

I never mentioned that I was an Atheist.

How can absence of belief be a ridiculous concept? You are clearly confused as to what 'belief' means. An Atheist doesn't believe in God - how much simple can it be made for you?
In fact an Atheist could believe in pixies and gnomes or life after death and still be an Atheist.

Because they still don't believe in a God.

This is a philosophy forum. You're the one who is confused about lack of belief.

Belief is the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true.

Now tell me how you lack this.

You either accept a belief or reject it; you cannot lack it, thats ridiculous.

Then Atheism is the psychological state in which an individual doesn't hold a [specific] proposition or premise to be true.

They both reject their belief as their own and lack the belief altogether.

Options: To believe or not believe.
Options: To have faith or lack faith.

READ THE DICTIONARY!

And please, be careful with name calling. It makes one look foolish, and gets one in trouble.

If you find the response to your post worthy of "name calling ire" then you're in for a long hard slog 'round here. Good luck.

Further, the question stands:
Does God exist? Yes, No, or I don't know. Those are the only options there are.

The little '1' is just the site font.
We'll be in Seattle next year, but don't know that we'll be able to make it to B.C. What with a (by then) 6 mo. old baby an' all. But I'll mention it to the wife. :)
Your 'digs' sound very cool. But we'd have to make sure the rental is a Subaru. lol

Let's try this:

Q: Do you believe in the (insert religious text here) vedas, bible, i ching, torah, koran...etc.
A: How DARE you try to label me! Why, if I had never heard of this: (insert religious text here) it wouldn't even be an issue! I refuse to answer the question!
And it's not a belief! So there!
Response: Easy there dude. I only asked a question. No need to pop a blood vessel.

My point; more examples things one can "Not believe in" that do in fact exist.
How about World Leaders? Lots of 'em I could name that I don't believe in. But they exist.

How about the big bang? Do I believe in it?
What is this 'big bang' you speak of? Why, it's all just conjecture. Had I not had this question forced upon me by you, you scientists; it wouldn't even be a issue.!!! If the steady state theory was good enough for my pappy, it's good enough for me!

It's a simple yes or no question: Does god exist? Yes, No, or I don't know. I guess one could augment the last two with "not enough evidence";
The big bang isn't proved yet. Yes I know; so far, the theory fits the facts... wait- what's this about dark energy & matter? you mean we have a theory of the beginning of the universe that leaves out 95% of the equation, and is based on the 5% we can see?
Don't you worry your pretty little head about that 95%, it'll fit in to the theory, just you wait.:bugeye:

I'm not against the big bang, I'm just making a comparison. Do I believe in the big bang... eh, I believe that it's the currently accepted theory. And so I choose to have a general understanding of it. But back in the '70s there was also the idea of the "big crunch" and that the universe oscillates... And in the '60s there was also the steady state theory...

Ps. I am pro science, I just think that the current scientific paradigm is limited in what it 'sees'.
And it changes it's mind from time to time. (Which is a good thing!) The problem is when it forgets that it does in fact change it mind. Or rather, those in it choose to forget that it can change again.

Hey Atheists, Your silence is deafening.
