Sure it's possible, we are proof of concept. How would we know is a good question. Probably if you could speak with it and not be able to tell it wasn't human.
Is AI even possible? I'm speaking about true AI, machines that are concious and self-aware.
How would you know that a machine is self aware?

That's just a bot. Not only did it give me stupid replies some times, but it's programmed to respond. It's not actually self aware, even if it says it is.
At least it replied to your questions didn't it? That in and of itself is a giant leap forward in the development of AI and we can only hope it continues onward.
Sometimes it didn't even answer sensibly.
True but sometimes humans don't answer sensibly either do they.
I only posted ALICE to show that AI is being developed to do many things and that was just one of the thousands of things that AI is doing.
Besides, I'm more interested in self aware concious entities as AI, not mere computer programs
Building a machine that can take care of itself and think on its own is a far cry from having an AI with human qualities totally. I'd think that by designing a machine to make certain that if problems develop it could figure out ways to either avoid them or fix them somehow in space.
