Is AI even possible? I'm speaking about true AI, machines that are concious and self-aware.

How would you know that a machine is self aware?

Sure it's possible, we are proof of concept. How would we know is a good question. Probably if you could speak with it and not be able to tell it wasn't human.

Yes but we are of flesh and blood. How do you know steel has the same potential?

I mean, if someone built a robot and programmed it to say "I am self aware", it does not mean it's self aware

It remains to be seen. The future is full of potential. I suspect we will see AI in our lifetimes. Something along the lines of Deep Junior that comes up with a theoretical innovation. Who knows?

They have had (and still have) machines that can learn, adapt, read, touch, feel, and react to such thing. Sony had a project called Qrio that it just recently ceased because of the lousy PS3. But as primitive as Qrio still was, it's quite extraordinary to watch... there are lots of video's of it on you tube.

Possibly. It should be interesting to see what advances they may even make during our lifetimes.

Problem is what do you call a machine. If self-aware machines ever come to be, could we still call it machines ?
Perhaps true intelligence and self-awareness can only be achieved with biological components.

If you want artificially created intelligence (human intervention) then take a chimp and modify the DNA...to have a thinking and talking chimp. This can happen in 3 to 4 years. (I heard Koreans are working on this).

If you want a computer to be self aware, wait till 2030. By then we will have the Internet infrastructure ready with the OC-132 pipe and all the hardware to get there.

If you can not wait that long, just wait a few years when the DoD has the human intelligence to give the contract to the firm that proposed it rather than giving it to the other guy who does not know what AI stands for! But then...military intelligence? Are you kidding....:D

The cost would be about $400 to $700 million today. $50 million in 2030.

That's just a bot. Not only did it give me stupid replies some times, but it's programmed to respond. It's not actually self aware, even if it says it is.

At least it replied to your questions didn't it? That in and of itself is a giant leap forward in the development of AI and we can only hope it continues onward. :)

Sometimes it didn't even answer sensibly.

True but sometimes humans don't answer sensibly either do they.

I only posted ALICE to show that AI is being developed to do many things and that was just one of the thousands of things that AI is doing.

TRue, but they don't say "What are the ingredients?" randomly

Besides, I'm more interested in self aware concious entities as AI, not mere computer programs.

We aren't there yet but they are working on it. Are you in that field of research yourself?

it's a little hard for me to imagine an AI that is selfaware because they don't have a soul. and i don't know how a soul could go inside a machine. but who knows what technology can accomplish after 1,000 or 10,000 years.

Building a machine that can take care of itself and think on its own is a far cry from having an AI with human qualities totally. I'd think that by designing a machine to make certain that if problems develop it could figure out ways to either avoid them or fix them somehow in space.

Free will.

That ought to be a problem..
