Why don't atheists reject values derived from religion?

I guess people in prison aren't known for their education, and they turn to religion for solace and redemption.

The question doesn't reach deep enough

Mind Over Matter said:

Perhaps because they realize religion promotes fundamental values like the value of life and love. There is no obvious reason why they should reject religion lock, stock and barrel.

I think the topic question—"Why don't atheists reject values derived from religion?"—overlooks that the "values derived from religion" are themselves derived from life.

Makes sense when you think about it. After all a confession and a couple of hail Mary’s and all is forgiven, or just let Jesus into your life and you are saved no matter what you've done.

I've heard Hitler was a Christian, does that mean he's in heaven waiting to greet all the other good Christians?

Come From God and/or Religion?

Stenger notes that: The religions of the world have lain claim to the role of arbiters of human behavior. There is no evidence that nonbelievers commit crimes or other antisocial acts in greater proportion than believers. Indeed, some studies indicate the opposite. Six of the seven states with the highest crime rates are in the Bible Belt. 80% of the prison population are Christians. Nontheists comprise about 0.2 percent. So, it is not the godless that fill prisons.

A child’s risk of sexual abuse by a family member increases as the family’s religious denomination becomes more conservative. Similarly, the probability of wife abuse increases with the rigidity of a church’s teachings pertaining to the gender roles and hierarchy. And what of the Catholic clergy’s sexual abuse of children? It speaks for itself.

Evangelical Christians are as likely to embrace lifestyles every bit as hedonistic, materialistic, self-centered, and sexually immoral as the world in general.” Divorce is more common among ‘born-again’ Christians than in the general American population. White evangelicals are the most likely people to object to neighbors of another race. Evangelical youth are only slightly less promiscuous than that of their nonevangelical peers. Protestants exhibit more symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder that the less religious or nonreligious.

SciWriter, spidergoat, Dywyddyr, and other atheists out there;

While you do not believe in god/ Jesus, do you have no problem hearing a song about the birth of Jesus around Christmas? Do you consider Christmas day the best holiday? Are you okay to retain religious holidays? I’m just curious…

What song? Which songs do I hear "about the birth of Jesus"?

Do you consider Christmas day the best holiday?
The only difference between Christmas Day and any other is that a friend usually invites me over for a meal with him and his family. Oh, and I get to see the Dr. Who Special as it's broadcast rather than wait for it come out on DVD.

Are you okay to retain religious holidays? I’m just curious…
What "religious holidays"? You mean the days when people aren't at work because firms shut down due to a mandate from government that particular days are declared to be non-working days because of long-standing cultural practices?

The Saturnalia festival was better, but holidays are always appreciated.

And the Rites of Spring were better than Easter, but fun can come out of that one, too.

Fascinating, but dont let facts get in the way here, atheists are evil !

Anything getting in the way of a religion concept of good or right must necessarily be identified by them as evil or wrong.

What they don't realize is that the only rational basis of the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity is the fact that God is not an isolated Person but a Community. In a purposeless universe morality is merely a human convention...

It's true that there are certain socialist tendencies in atheism's out look.
Morals and ethics have different consistency under atheism that reflect the scientific community. It's mostly the concept of Can Then Do. That's a well known philosophy that has no restraint or self control. Most governments also reflect that perview as well. Life isn't important but rights are and then those who can recognize their rights and more importantly demand them or have the power to do so will dominate. It's all about domination.

Benign Religions starts with a more fundamental quality of life. Nurturing and Caring. It's necessary for life to grow and thus it's socially progressive (if followed) I said this before in another thread, Morals are the considerations a single human puts ahead of himself when others are involved. It's an age old concept but strangely like technology it's taken thousands of years to develop.

Really?

Evidence please.

And killing off or subjugating anyone who doesn't subscribe.

It's necessary for life to grow
Source please.

and thus it's socially progressive (if followed)
Socially progressive? Instituting a "don't ask, don't look because we know and we'll tell you only what [we decide] you need to know" policy that promotes "progression" that appears akin to stagnation?

Yes.

Evidence please.

Evidence of Can Then Do is evident with just about every scientific discovery.
Start with Weapons of Mass Destruction.

And killing off or subjugating anyone who doesn't subscribe.

IS that any different from Socialism and the current Western attitude? You can pretend people aren't executed for breaking the law, you can pretend socialist and atheistic systems haven't killed millions but it doesn't elevate your position at all.

Source please.
Reality.

Religion is the root of all evil, it has been manipulated so many times over two millenia it has become unbelievable entwined with hypocrisy, corruption & deceipt. An existentialist though believes in humanism which I think is far more believable. However "Why don't atheists reject values derived from religion?" Well who is a pure athiest our parents bring us up as Christians for example (or Muslim I am being non specific) so instilled from us from an early age is some form of morality & manners in society.

Athiests are usually fed up spotty sprout eating vegan homosexual students who have no social skills & cannot get a job when they graduate anyway,,, so wake up & smell the coffee. Can anyone say they know a true Athiest it is a philosophy anyway like the rest of the cranks out there !!

Was that really necessary?
Got problems, buddy?

yep I hate workshy fed up spotty sprout eating vegan homosexual students who have no social skills & cannot get a job when they graduate.

The Athiests I have met so far in life & in my global travelling usually resemble more or less this description. Or they come from a dysfunctional family,,,, well thats their excuse anyway.

An Atheist dies and, to his surprise, finds himself met by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.

St. Peter reviews the man's record and tells him, "Well, even though you didn't believe in any deities, you led a good, moral life. It is especially good that you did so without expecting any eternal reward. So we are going to let you into Heaven."

St. Peter then assigns an angel to take the Atheist on an indoctrination tour. During the tour, the Atheist sees Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, other Atheists, and people of all religions. He also notices a high wall in a far corner of Heaven.

When the tour ends, the angel asks him if he has any questions. The man asks, "What's behind the high wall in the corner?"

The angel replies, "That's where we put the Christians. They think they're the only people up here."

Don,t forget The Bible was written by the same people who said the world was flat!! :wallbang:
