Come A Little Bit Closer

The Lion Sleeps Tonight (newer version not the Tokens)
That song was written and recorded in 1939 by Solomon Linda, for a South African record company. The Tokens were one of many singers and ensembles who recorded it; their version hit #1 in 1961 and eventually earned $15M in royalties. Then Warner Brothers used it in the Ace Ventura movies, and finally Disney used it in "The Lion King," and now it's made even more money.

The impoverished descendants of Mr. Linda are suing for a tiny bit of that fortune.

In America we sing the chorus as "wee-mo-way," a pronunciation established by Pete Seeger in 1957 when his folksinging group The Weavers recorded it at Carnegie Hall. The spelling has since been standarized in American English as "wimoweh."

It's actually spelled and pronounced MBUBE, the Swahili word for "lion." Three syllables: MM-BOO-BAY.

Neil Sedaka was an original member of the Tokens, although he had left the group by the time they recorded this song.

So they deserve something that another family relative did over 100 years ago? The copyright lapsed many decades ago and therefore they are not entitled to anything legally speaking.

Killjoy: Please include the title of the song. Many of us are unable to access these websites from our office computers.
Sorry. Did not know that.
