My friend's daughter sings in a traditional Bulgarian a cappella group, Black Sea Hotel. They do the "throat singing," but I'm not sure there's any of it in this performance.

Great minds think alike! And of course I mean my choice of Bulgarian genre and your daughter's choice of ensemble (you don't count)! Just kidding: sounds like the apple fell pretty near the low hanging branches.

We could talk about those distinguishing features: polyrhythms/asymmetrical meters, modes, and of course that distinctive haunting sound from those suspended dissonances.

She's the daughter of a friend of mine, who is a full-time professional musician--composer, concert pianist, and teacher. I have no children.
Well you are obviously associating with cool interesting people. I misread the post and jumped to the conclusion that the girl's interest in Bulgarian music was connected to your own interest in languages of that region. But thanks for the post . . . until I saw it I never even imagined the Bulgarian choir music might be melded with hip hop!
