Hmm, definitely language... but then followed in a close second by sharp, pointy objects.

The greatest and most influencial invention in all of history.. predates fire and even launguage... its the stick.. the use of it as a club. to kill people.

after which comes fire and launguage... and then Mathmatics... and then the battery.. and then the AC motor... as well as lot of other stuff.

with respect
(Oh, the irony is palpable. Some of us *still* haven't mastered language. :) )

The most important invention ever? The alphabet of course. With it we can actually do everything we have been able to, without it, where would we be?

Agree with sargentlard
I vote for the computer

Language isn't really an invention, just a way to communicate, other animals do that too, and electricity is a force of nature. We just discovered how to control it to an extent.

The carry bag - shoulder bag, pouch on a string, whatever.

Without it: no language beyond signifiers, no civilization, no wheels, no old folks around the fire telling stories, no long distance travel with the family, etc.

All those stone tools would still be back at the place they were made.

It's the "gatherer" part of hunter/gatherer, and it probably came first.
