So I have to do jury service

Fuckin' random my ass. I don't want to do, but I have to.

Shall I defer it for next year? or shall I just do it and get it over and done with?

I have to sit in a jury! and decide the outcome of a criminal case.
and worse part of all you are a muslim fanatic!

Has anybody had a positive experience of being on a jury?

I've certainly heard of some, and I recently read a book which came out strongly in favor of the jury system.

I did it a couple of months back, found it brilliant actually. Probably not for the reasons you're asking but, to cut a long story short, out of the full ten working days required to attend I only had to pop in four mornings, only got called for selection on one trial (which is done randomly, names out of a box) and for the lot I was able to claim the full two weeks loss of earnings.

With that, on top of expenses, meant I actually made a profit on the deal - I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The CPS actually pay up on time, no chasing them for payment outstanding - if only everything in life were so simple.

Muslim - for you're two weeks mandatory service you can claim up to £56.00 a day for loss of earnings. Expenses such as travel and meals are on top. Should, for whatever reason, a trial (assuming you even get selected, which isn't guaranteed) force you to attend over the mandetory 2 weeks the rate is higher. Do the math. Assuming you are even called to serve on an actual jury, which isn't at all guaranteed, you still get to claim for you're loss of earnings, travel etc: most crown cases as piffling affairs, hardly crime of the century, and if you don't want to sit on a jury you just put your hand up and say: "Please Mr Honour, you're Worshipfulness, I'd like to be excused now, innit."

You can't be forced to sit on a jury. Basically you're just there to make up the numbers and make sure there is plenty of available choice.

It's actually interesting. Get it out of the way, over and done with. If you do opt out, they'll only call you back in a couple of months anyway.

You got a summons in the mail, right? So just blow it off. They don't know if you received it or not, or what your excuse might be for not showing up - and there are a thousand. You want to be strict about it, then reply just saying, "Unable to attend," Marriage in the family next week," "Will be out of the country for the next month, sorry."

There's a legal presumption that you have received the mail after a certain number of days after it being sent, if you can't prove otherwise. The number of days varies from country to country.

Hate to disappoint you Muslim, but when I went, 80% of the jurors were over fifty, at least. As for barristers, they won't talk to you - you'll only see them in the courtroom.
