:m: Peace.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I feel a sense of community with my fellow SciForums members (as much community as can be felt with people you never have and likely will never meet, but with whom you interact on a fairly regular basis). I try to treat other members with respect, even when their conduct does not warrant said respect. I also try to maintain a balance between debate threads (like political crap) and discussion threads (like your favorite movie or video game) since it allows me to interact with people on a level other than fighting.

Which came first, "American" English, or "British" English?

The Model T came before the Mustang, but that doesn't make the Mustang any less a car.

A lot of you guys are very clever, and know a thing or two about a lot of things. Some of us are gifted amateurs and some of us illiterate idiots. Thankfully the latter is in the lower percentages. I get baffled by science in here, annoyed by religious quotes from a book I have no time for, and dismayed by some of the things said in here BUT I am proud to be a member. We are a community and a true community is made up of all these elements.

The language we use most commonly is "english" be it american english or british english; the vast majority being american english. I suppose this one is becoming the language of the internet, or already has. I am guilty of thinking MY WAY is the proper way to spell something, thats the way I was brought up, as are my american friends to their way of thinking.

We have to find common ground, and that is midway between us, in the centre (center) of the pond. I will go with that train of thought. However, there are some people in here who think that sms speak (mobile phone script) is normal. That is not, I cannot for the life of me be bothered to interpret it and won't. There are others who are illiterate, for whatever reason. They need to work on that methinks.

I do not hold myself up as an icon of the written word, far from it, but please - lets try and make your posts intelligible eh? ;)

Anyway, I am man enough to apologise - so lets move on ;)

Ignore lists are for wusses! I just wade through all the silly stuff peopel have posted, and get to have a carack at them when they do it again. (or at least thats my biased viewpoint. :D )

As for American and UK english, they were fairly similar a coupel hundred years ago, but both have diverged, its no longer a matter of correctness, hence they are recognised more as dialects. Spelling differences have accumulated in part because the USA uses many older spellings, I think color/ colour is one of them.
