Did he believe(or attempt to show) that he was an individual ,an irreducible and distinct part of the wider physical or social existence?

I feel that we bleed into our environment and therein lies our identity.

John Donne said "No man is an island".

Were Hume and Donne contemporaries?

Did they disagree on this idea of identity?

Was he being flippant?Is one of the keys to knowing joy a lot of hard work?

Joy may be like a mirage in the desert that we strive to approach and accept realistically that it is unattainable in a settled way.

Do people like me look down their noses at people who seem to be "too" happy?
