42 is a reference to the HIthchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. it is the answer to life, the universe, and everything--but nobody knows the question. i believe that if both the question and answer were known the universe would be destroyed, or something to that end.

Hitchhiker's is written by Douglas Adams. i'm told it's worth checking out.

The books are wonderful, haven't seen the movie.
