My son came home from school yesterday and he was telling me that there was a new girl at school, and she isnt allowed to talk to boys until she is older, because of her religious teachings, i don't know what religion she is, but i thought it was strange that her perents opted to send her to a mix sex school. surely if because of religious teachings she can't talk to boys why send her to a mixed sex school,

i didn't really belive him until i spoke with my sons teacher today, and she said yes it is true, this young girl who is just 8yrs old cannot talk to males until a certain age.

But why send her to a mix sex school?

also can someone please shed some light on what religion this may be and at what age are these girls permitted to talk to boys? also what about her father? brother? uncles? can she talk to them?

(i apologise if this is in the wrong forum but i didnt know where to put it)

I think lepustimidus 's comment was in regards to the OP??

Anyways, IMHO, this "not speaking" concept does seem absurd, but not surprising. I am not familiar with which particular repressive religion advocates these tenents, but am curious...

Also, I would like to know why? In other words, what is the expected benefit of not allowing a child to speak to the opposite sex? Seems counterproductive for later life...

or public single sex schools. how common are they, i only know very few in sydney.

Perhaps this little girl is in the religious sect known as Lesbianology and they are teaching her to only talk to other girls to insure she doesn't get involved with boys to remain "intact" as a lesbian.

L.A. that's just plain daft, them parents not allowing her to speak to boys. But that aside, yout son does not have to aquiesce to their religious restrictions and can talk to her all he likes, and I reckon he should do so.

The school are under no obligation to provide that kid with same sex partners for school activities, and they should do not so, everyone should be treated the same, regardless of religion. I'd hate to think that pairings of kids would revolve around one weirdo cults preferences.

I've never heard of any religion that requires that degree of sexual segregation.

Not even Islam does.

thats what i told my son and his teacher, i explained to my son that he can talk to her, and if she doesnt talk back then just carry on talking, he likes this girl but she will not even say hello to him, and the teacher just says well its her religion.

spider i doubt the school is in favor of this but what can they do?
They cant force her to talk to males, they just have to work with what they get

Wonder what the age is that is safe, in those parents' eyes.

This looks less like a formal religion than a parental idiosyncrasy with dubious roots.

Indeed, boys only get worse until about age 25. I mean, it's like vaccinating a child against a disease or exposing them to Chicken Pox. If you don't get them acclimated to the very nature of boys/young men at an early age, the girl is going to end up screwed-up, knocked-up and possibly both.

Separate thought: I've always believe that boys and girls, from 5th-10th grade, needed to be in separate classrooms. I can think of the vast majority of the misbehavior of boys and girls and it was mostly due to the distractions of the opposite sex during those years. I mean, I was a walking bag of testosterone during those years and though I wasn't ever much into the opposite sex, I can see how overwhelming it was for my peers during those times. Let 'em mix at lunch time and extra-curricular activities, but in the classroom, I can see the wisdom of keeping horny boys away from little girls in heat.

yes they are in favor of it, they are making sure she only gets female pupils on her tables at lunchtime, and in the class room, wouldnt that in itself be unfair to the other kids?

Yes, that bullshit, letting her parents dictate how the school is run. If her religious dogma is so important, her religion should provide schools.
