According to a report by the Justice Policy Institute in 2002, the number of black men in prison has grown to five times the rate it was twenty years ago. Today, more African-American men are in jail than in college. In 2000 there were 791,600 black men in prison and 603,032 enrolled in college. In 1980, there were 143,000 black men in prison and 463,700 enrolled in college.

I don't have the latest figures. But this is an incredibly poor outlook for the future unless urgent steps are taken to remedy/reverse this situation.:bawl:

blame my ego ... but being white and educated and not in jail, I rather want to remain the same way and not care for those who failed to strive for their future.

What country(ies) does this survey/statistic include?

Dont cry S.P.A.M,

Did you ever think sam that for many it is much more fun being an outlaw than an inlaw?

I assume one where there are African Americans?

Why are you so interested in stuff that goes on in the U.S.?
Is India so effin boring that you can't post anything about it?
It really would be nice to see you post something about your own country instead of pointing out every little issue with the United States. Why don't you talk about that remote village in NW India that just now got electricity in it by solar power? I thought that was quite interesting.

What steps would YOU take, Sam? Because as I mentioned, for someone who bashes the U.S. constantly, you seem to be fairly interested in what goes on over here. Let's hear your suggestions.

Not to sound racist, but maybe just more crime is committed by minorities. It may be due to several reasons, including that a lot of minorities live in low income housing areas; which are known for high crime. It could be that the minority population has boomed over the past few decades.
Also, let's take a look at a few of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. off the top of my head
-Memphis, TN
-Detroit, MI
-Camden/Newark, NJ
-Compton, CA
-Gary, IN (a ghetto suburb of Chicago)

Here is a complete list. Take a look at the top 25. I have counted several of those cities that I didn't list above also with over 50% minority population.

But I can't say for sure that's the cause, but it's a wierd coincidence.
There could be other factors. The minority population has also grown in the past 20 years so crime could have went up because of that.

That's perfectly understandable according to people like Bill Cosby and Barak Obama. Both of them have said (and Cosby has said so repeatedly) that black youths have been on the WRONG track for quite some time. They think it's cool to be dumb and uneducated because getting an education and trying to be smart is "white stuff." They also said that by idolizing and imitating the "gangsta" mentality is, without a doubt, leading them on the path to jail.

So, my question is: why are you surprised at those numbers? They are precisely the results of what both of those men with experience in that particular area have predicted.

That appears to be the trend. Why? Why is education becoming unpopular? What has changed?

I dont think much has changed, if anything has changed it is the availibilty of contraband. These are mostly inner city kids with temptations are all around them. They are not rich but far from poor compared to some other countries.

People who stay out of trouble have nice homes and raise good families regardless of their color.

What are the dropout rates in non-blacks?

Or is this effort all for black communities?

I don't have any accurate numbers because the answer varies depending on the source. But the ratios are generally the same. White is less than Black and Hispanic is about twice that of Whites. In the past few years the Hispanic rate has grown the fastest due to immigration from Mexico, primarily.

Same as what? 10 years ago? 20 years ago? Other countries?

Current. The current ratios in the US is what I'm talking about.

If you read the OP, I am discussing the change in the last 20 something years. Is there a change in dropout rates in all high school students in the last 20 something years? I am less interested in the issue of race, more in the decline of education, and its possible causes.

Yes, there has been a change. The dropout rate has increased overall for that period.
