People use the word 'fuck' casually in conversation on here and no one gets banned for that, so what's so wrong with saying c*nt??

I don't think it was the fact that you three were using the word, but rather the context (referring to each other as the term, and such).

VI forget about making head or tail of it its simply pointless. The rules here are arbitrary and its as simple as that either use the word when you feel like it or leave. I mean do you really care about the ban?

I do object to one thing and its this statement:

"Posting obscenities in breach of agreement you signed up to." I never signed up to this agreement. When I became a member here the agreement didn't have these silly rules nor where they an issue especially when used by members in a thread like Varda's.

I fail to see how it was used obscenely, as a matter of fact I didn't know what the ban was about until I returned!

Lucysnow:

The agreement you clicked "ok" to when you signed up (and you DID agree to this, as it has not changed for the entire existence of sciforums) says:

"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

What happens when you try to log in during a ban? Do you not get a message explaining why you are banned? If not, can you not look at the Ban List?

Here's what happened here.

Varda used the word to insult other members of the forum (which is a breach of the forum rules). Specifically, she referred to them as "whiney c**ts". She was not banned for that, but warned not to use such language in respect of other members again.

Instead of heeding the warning, Varda decided to post a thread using the word as the title. In other words, she chose to ignore the warning that was given that continued use of the word was unacceptable, fully aware of the likely consequences.

The other 3 posters who were suspended decided to join in Varda's fun and games to stir the shit. And yet, each one of those posters has signed an agreement not to post vulgar material. In other words, they all knew the rules and decided to flout them along with Varda.

I note that a one-day account suspension is the lightest possible suspension we can hand out. In the ordinary course of events, posters whose accounts are suspended start with 3 days off. Since this was a "bandwagon" offense, I decided to be a little more forgiving.

And by this I am supposed to assume which words are obscene, vulgar, hateful, etc.? Really James in six years I have yet to know of ANY word that's ban worthy save the racially motivated. I didn't even know why I was being banned. I mean I was in the middle of a completely different thread some hours after when the ban was suddenly issued and I was popped off the site. I thought it might have to do with what I was posting in Hitler is misrepresented thread. i didn't know it was over Varda's silly thread and the use of the word 'cunt'. No sorry. It cannot be use of the word since Tiassa used the word and he wasn't banned so I figure its about some other arbitrary thing. You cannot pretend that we KNOW which word of the week is ban worthy and which ones are not, so perhaps in future you can place the word somewhere so we can all know which words are naughty and worthy of instant ban but don't tell me such nonsense about what I signed six years ago, half of you people were not even mods six years ago and it was a completely different site. Maybe you should set up new agreements so we can see what we are agreeing to under 'regime change'. Really dolling day bans over the word is pure nonsense. But yes James NOW I know why I couldn't log in thank you very much.

I think this ranks as one of top 10 stupidest things to be defiant about or try to defend. Also one of the dumbest "points" to try and make. The real issue is that people perceive an authority to rebel against, and make a game out of it.
It could have been any word really- for example "bomb". If you put a policy in place making it illegal to say the word bomb, then someone would inevitably use it when they felt like being an asshole.

I think you can safely assume that what is generally considered the most obscene word in the English language is not acceptable. Let's try just a little honesty, ok?

Just for definiteness, you can assume that "c**t" will be ban-worthy every week. If in doubt about other words, my advice is don't use them.

Oh, and I was a mod 6 years ago, and the sign-up agreement was the same then as now, as I noted before.

Really dolling day bans over the word is pure nonsense.

I thought I'd explained that context was important and not just the bare word. Moreover, I carefully explained the context for you in a previous post. You can play the ingenue all you like, but I know you're not really as stupid as you'd have us believe.

But I am being honest. We use expletives on this site and every one of them fuck, shit, asshole, wanker, git etc are all considered obscene to someone.

No James I don't sit around pondering my language on these boards which is just as appalling as it was six years ago (sorry I forgot you were a simple mod back then), anyway none of the above words were ever ban worthy not even when directed towards another member. In varda's thread no one was directing expletives towards anyone since it was all tongue and cheek and nothing but a laugh so I do not see what you mean by context which was a point I took up with varda in the thread. As I said its all arbitrary but it is ALWAYS arbitrary I don't expect that to change.

You can say fuck, cock, shit, cunt, etc. as long as these words aren't used to describe other SciForums member.

wanker? git? :bugeye:

next your going to be telling me "ookie poo" and "tuc" are obscene? never heard of these made up words. . .

eh. . . must be cultural. . . I think I remember hearing them in a funny foreign movie.

point is, I once had a linguistics teacher at uni once spent nearly a whole semester on Noam Chomsky, and see, the funny thing about language? It is only as powerful as the listener allows it to be. Those two "obscene" words? In North America are just pure gibberish. Hell, a cartoon character on a Saturday morning show could probably say them, and no one here would bat a lash. So?

I guess offensive words are not out of the mouths of the speaker. . . but only in the ears of the listener.

That Carlin video highlights what this is about to a tee! Its brilliant!

Thanks for the clarification Plazma. It means the ban I was issued was pure RUBBISH!

No, you can't see anything except for when your ban will be lifted.
Like when I was banned recently after sharing with my fellow forum members the painful secret that I was once fingered betwix my buttocks by an older gentlemen, in a thread specifically for sharing secrets of this nature, I still have no idea why I was banned. All I know is the ban contributed significantly to the guilt and shame I already felt for being targetted for such abuse, reaffirming my suspicion that I am a very naughty boy for tempting older fellows with my dirty dirty little bottom. I should have been wearing longer shorts, simple as that, at least a belt...
I am very sorry for this, forgive me james? for tempting gentlemen like yourself? I promise I will keep my shamefull bottom hole securely locked away in the future. I just feel so bad all the time.

There must be an answer: Let it be, let it be

This place is sometimes psychotic. I remember once when Plazma had this really cool animated .GIF avatar that included a Parental Warning sticker, and people threw a bloody fit because it had a naughty word in it.

And now we're supposed to be upset that we can't mock depressed people as whiny cunts?

What the hell is wrong with people?

Yes, I realize that certain members were just having fun with the word "cunt" and ended up with one-day trips. But, really, it's one thing to go sticking your head in a lion's mouth if you're a circus performer; it's not so wise to go tempting a forum administrator, though, on such a touchy issue.

I've never understood, in my nine years and three hundred fifty-three days here, what is so hard for people to understand about how to be insulting, or how to be profane, or what the idea of general decency means. And I can probably spend another 3,641 days at Sciforums and still not get it.

Being properly vicious requires a little effort. Being viciously stupid is a lot easier, but you'll find the moderators and administrators don't take it as well.

Think of it this way: If we undertook dramatic changes to the rules in order to oblige civility, how many of you would be upset?

Not I, said the Street Level Rump-Shaking Duck of Truth.

We don't want to do it. That's why we haven't. But come on. If you can't figure a sensible limit, one will be drawn for you. And that's all that happened this time.

If you push the shiny, jolly, candy-like button, don't be surprised if something blows up.
