Israel, Palestine and the Arab/Israel Conflict

What exactly is "Hasbara" SAM?

This for example, referring to the Israeli panel to independently investigate the Gaza flotilla raid:

"the structure and terms of reference of Israel's proposed independent public commission can meet the standard of a prompt, impartial, credible, and transparent investigation." - Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs

Lets see what that means in practical terms:
There a number of problems with the panel tasked to investigate the Israeli actions aboard the flotilla, but the most glaring is the people who will sit on it. The chairman of the panel, former Supreme Court Justice Yaakov Tirkel, told Army Radio that "he opposed bringing in foreign observers and made clear that he is not a devotee of drawing conclusions about individuals and dismissing those responsible for failures," according to a Haaretz editorial.
Two foreign observers--who won't have the right to vote on anything related to the commission--will indeed be on the panel, but one them is David Trimble, who, as Richard Silverstein points out, "is a co-founder of the newly launched Israel advocacy group, Friends of Israel, joining John Bolton, Dore Gold, and Spain’s former right-wing prime minister, Jose Aznar." Is there better company than John Bolton and Dore Gold to be close with when joining an "credible" inquiry investigating Israel's deadly use of force against unarmed activists trying to break the siege of Gaza?

In the time since then, it has emerged that Amos Horev, one of the three Israeli panel members, helped castrate an Arab in the mid-1940s who had been accused of attempting to rape a Jewish woman. The act of castration inspired a popular song in Hebrew.
It has also emerged (thanks to Richard Silverstein) that another member of the panel, Shabtai Rosenne, helped David Ben-Gurion brainstorm lies which would cover up the Israeli military's massacre at Qibya, in which Ariel Sharon led a force that murdered 60 Palestinian civilians, an act that outraged the world in 1953.

It has also emerged that it is not a “public commission” (va’adat hakirah mamlakhtit, in Hebrew), but an “examination committee” (va’adat bedikah; or “examination forum”, as Ze’ev Segal of Haaretz called it), with no statutory standing or authority. It cannot subpoena witness or documents, and may only address two questions: the legality of the siege on Gaza and consequent commandeering of the flotilla, and the “proportionality” of the force exerted by Israeli forces. Needless to say, any conclusions the “forum” may reach will be entirely non-binding, although I doubt there will be any “unpleasant” conclusions. Netanyahu and his justice minister, Ya’akov Ne’eman, have made sure of that.

------------------

And finally:
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the start of Monday's cabinet meeting that the main goal of the Gaza flotilla probe is to prove to the world that the Israel Navy operation on the Gaza-bound aid ship was appropriate and met international standards.

"The government decision will make it clear to the world that Israel is acting legally, responsibly, and with complete transparency," said Netanyahu.

Thats Israeli hasbara for you. The anticipation for the conclusions of the "investigation" is killing me.

If I were a cruel, vindictive sort, I would ask "You're comparing a singlalong to the rape of an innocent woman?"

Fortunately, I am not that cruel, vindictive - but astoundingly fair - person.

well after much thought I'm bowing out. when you have to argue that a just and moral law be followed and for the law in general to be followed its clear you can't win because the people you against don't care about the frameworks involved and follow only their whims and beliefs.

Indeed: there is nothing for the Forces of Immorality but Defeat. Were they moral, thinking people, they'd never align with the Dark Horde of The Empire in the first place.

Razing of Palestinian homes in E. Jerusalem approved despite 250 shortfalls in plan
Documents obtained by Haaretz suggest that the plan to raze 22 Palestinian homes in Silwan to make room for tourist center was not ready to be approved by planning committee, but was rushed by Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat.

Onward, one state

Just a thought, is it a coincidence that all the Haredi Jews are being pushed into what is occupied Palestine, is Israel looking for a way to get rid of them into a future Palestinian state [as they delusionally think is still possible]?

No.. really?

After the flotilla disaster, one would think that the Israeli Government of the day would be wanting some good press internationally. We heard of the supposed easing of the blockade, applauded as a good step forward in ending the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. But then we get this:

Israel confiscated seven oxygen machines en route to hospitals in the West Bank and Gaza based on the claim that there was a chance the generators attached to the machines would not be used for medical purposes, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported Saturday.

According to Ma'an, the Ramallah-based health ministry said that the generators, which were donated to the Palestinian Authority by a Norwegian development agency, were seized by Israeli officials despite the fact that only one machine was bound for Gaza.

The generators "came under the category of possible use for non-medical purposes" if they were delivered to southern Gaza, the Palestinian health ministry said in a statement, adding that the six other machines were bound for government hospitals in the northern Gaza, inducing the European Hospital in Gaza City, the Rafdieyah hospital in Nablus, and other facilities in Ramallah and Hebron.

:bugeye:

No really?

When will the madness end? Instead of trying to court the world again after that disaster on that flotilla, it does this? Has the Netanyahu's Government lost it's collective mind? Easing the blockade is a good move in the right direction. Confiscating oxygen machines (life saving and essential medical equipment) destined for hospitals is a massive step backwards. So is awarding the naval commandos for "earlier operations":

The IDF is gradually coming around to the recognition that it blundered in the flotilla operation, despite the general citation that the chief of staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, awarded the naval commandos this week for earlier secret operations. (A modicum of sensitivity would have postponed the ceremony until the committee headed by Maj. Gen. (ret.) Giora Eiland submits its findings about the flotilla incident. ) The Eiland panel, which this week began hearing testimony from people involved in planning the operation, also knows this.

The face palm moments just continues. Added to this is Lieberman's statement that once the freeze over expanding into the West Bank ends in September, there would be more than 10,000 Jews in the region, and as Amos Harel points out, this is not due to "population growth". As Harel points out, further expansion will also put further strain on Israel's relationship with the White House. Europe is already upset after the flotilla disaster and that the blockade was not lifted entirely.

Some wise words from Daniel Levy:

In short, the game is up. This is not defeatism - it's an acknowledgment of a reality that, by ignoring, causes Israel to imperil itself. It cannot be reversed by a good YouTube video or by cloning President Peres. An occupation that just entered its 44th year and entails denying basic rights to millions of Palestinians can no longer be sanitized. As long as Israel maintains that occupation, the costs will become increasingly burdensome.

Having lost the world, Israel's focus turns in on itself. The country's leadership has to work harder to keep its own public on board for the occupation project. This requires a growing suppression of dissent, further ostracizing Israel's Palestinian minority, and ever-more aggressive appeals to Jewish national pride. Democratic norms are thereby eroded, further feeding the tarnishing of Israel's image. This is the vicious cycle in which Israel is embroiled.

What about asses?

Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.

Then Samson said,
"With a donkey's jawbone
I have made donkeys of them. [a]
With a donkey's jawbone
I have killed a thousand men."
[Judges 15-16]

Are asses weapons of mass destruction for Palestinians?
