Take for example Egypt and the Pharaohs, we don't see them in charge any longer do we? Yet their beliefs are still known today but no one follows them do they.

There has in fact been a revival of ancient Egyptian religion for the past thirty years or so, centered in the United States. It is called Kemetism, after the Egyptian language name for Egypt, Kmt, with arbitrary vowels filling the unknown spaces for pronounceability.

What was the Egyptian belief?

From a Jungian standpoint, its core was the universal pantheon of gods that mirror the archetypal dimensions of the human spirit in other traditional polytheistic religions. It endured for more than three thousand years so it underwent many changes, especially politicization by dominant factions, resulting in the recrafting of the personalities of the gods. There was even a brief period of monotheism under Akhenaten which ended abruptly with his death.

Egyptian religion had a creation myth although multiple versions of it have been passed down, perhaps due to politicization or the biases of foreign scholars. In one, the first god arises out of the water, just as Egypt itself rises out of the Nile every year. The religion also had an elaborate vision of the afterlife which required preservation of a corpse so that its spirit could reunite with it for the journey to the heavens. The preservation procedure is a bit strange by the standards of Orthodox Jews who hold a similar belief, since the brain and most organs were removed and embalming--and later mummification--was practiced.

Just as today with every religion we are all being used by religions for their own money makinhg and controlling purposes.
