Does religion lead to a happier life?

Statistics show that theists are happier than atheists

Well clearly, as shown, the "statistics" are complete made up horse poop.

I accept life for how it is - cancer, parasites and all. The theist cannot accept reality. He needs to feel that he is special and that all his wrongdoings are forgiven by some ultimate authority - where I can actually forgive myself for my own wrong doings, (and that is what's important). The theist seems to have a problem with humans in general and ultimately himself. From this I would assert that atheists are happier.. they accept who they are, not who they wish they were.

Why on Earth would someone say that "theism" leads to a happier life? Maybe with the stupid hope that some atheists would say: "Ok, then I will believe in God, and be happier".
That belief would be as fake as Pamela Anderson´s titties.

I'm not sure if you are talking to me but I was being sarcastic.. well sort of ;)

It's possible. There is some data to suggest that belief in god is associated with increased productivity (although attendenace at services is not). Medical research suggests that people who believe respond somewhat better to treatment (so belief may carry it's own placebo effect). People who believe may report more happiness in surveys. And they may be some other pragmatic benefits to believing.

I imagine, though, if I went around believing that the gov't is doing it's best for me and that the future is bright and rosy I might (temporarily) be happier as well, but then again, as the cliche says, "Ignorance is bliss."

I believe it. Why be depressed about things when you know god is going to take care of it? As an atheist, I know things don't happen for a reason. My Mom, on the other hand, thinks everything happens according to gods plan, we just don't see it. Ignorance is bliss.
