Do you like how Dawkins, Hitchens et al. represent atheists?

From the link above - you really should read them.

"Memes are essentially sets of instructions that can be followed to produce behavior."

From this, you should be able to determine what would constitute a meme.

Therefore, you should be able to determine if a weather report is a meme.

According to the definition, it is. But what does that mean?

Seems fairly straight forward, what is it you don't understand?

If I don't listen to the weather report, does that mean my behaviour is different from those who do? Suppose, I just lick my finger and put it outside the window, or read the "signs" in the sky, am I devoid of that meme? Or not? What does it mean if my signs give me a better idea of the weather than the report? What is the meme there?

Also, how does that explain the spread of behaviour without any observable link? Where is the meme? Do birds open milk bottles because they imitate, because its transmitted in the air? In their genes?

Can another man independently come up with a tune that has already been "discovered" ? If yes, where is the meme? If no, why not?

One man hears John Lennon and wants to shoot him, did he get a different meme from his songs?

Defining something as a meme means absolutely nothing to me. Is memetics itself a meme?

Its completely meaningless.

PS Do you have any opinion at all?

Meteorologists don't just lick their fingers and put it outside to get a weather report.

What set of instructions are you following, if any?

Not sure what you mean.

One man hears John Lennon and wants to shoot him, did he get a different meme from his songs?

Or, maybe he got his meme from, 'The Catcher in the Rye?'

It's not meaningless at all. Try wrap your head around it. No big deal.

Ooookaaay.

So, is a weather report a meme or not?

I already described what I think, what do you think?

PS Is this a discussion, or a viva voce?

I haven't seen that post, where is it? Where do you apply the definition of memes to weather reports?

Should I do your thinking for you, again?

<< Therefore, you should be able to determine if a weather report is a meme. >>

Don't you read your own words, Q.

Could you possibly be so kind to tell us

1) what a meme is?

2) what use it it?

3) how do form the decision what is a "meme" and what isn't?

Exactly.

Its more akin to Mediums contacting 'the other side'...where is the meat?

Surely, I can, Billy. :)

In all fairness, though, should I honor you that which you've refused everyone else?

In other words you can't.

Okay..you've had yer chance...anybody else here who can tell us what use 'memes' are and how we distinguish them?

I already described what I think, what do you think?

Ok sam, I guess I'll have to do it for you.

First, the general definition, as was provided:

"Memes are essentially sets of instructions that can be followed to produce behavior."

So, is a weather report a meme?

We need to first distinguish whether or not a weather report can be a set of instructions?

A set of instructions are a number of messages describing how something gets done. A weather report is a prediction; a statement about the future. Strictly speaking, it does not appear to follow that definition.

If the weather report predicted afternoon thundershowers, would one tend to grab their umbrellas before going out? Especially if you were in a position to get soaked if you didn't bring one?

Where then do the 'set of instructions' appear in a weather report? Our behavior, perhaps? As a result of getting soaked in the past when we didn't bring our umbrellas, maybe?

Of course, there's the possibility someone wants to run naked through the rain. So, maybe they wouldn't bring an umbrella.

The 'set of instructions' in a weather report is not apparent, but implied based on our past experience with weather.

So, the weather report may likely not be the meme, but perhaps instead the catalyst to the behavior, based on the set of instructions gleaned from past experiences with weather.

There are a lot of 'ifs and buts' in there..and far too many "perhaps" it does this/that and the other..lets face facts..you are whistling in the wind aren't you?

Its described as a acting like a 'virus'. How is it passed on from one person to another?

I love it when scientists start getting all philosophical.//.poor ole Q..he'll be waffling about the 'Collective Unconscious' next. lol!

So all the sets of instructions are implied? Like shaving legs before wearing shorts, saying f*ck when you're <insert favorite moments here>, defining all cultural behavior.

And all this is because these implied instructions act as a virus, taking over our ability to make decisions so that we act in accordance with our cultural evolution?

So in other words, if I ignore a weather report my behaviour is an indication of my past experiences following an implied set of instructions? Which are a meme?

So basically anything with the potential to affect behaviour is a meme?

What then is a discrete unit of memetics? How is it transmitted? Does it exist independently as a unit?

Guess, I better join the church

Where did I say that?

Who said that?

Where did I make that conclusion?

I don't recall saying that either?

What then is a discrete unit of memetics? How is it transmitted? Does it exist independently as a unit?

Those are all questions answered in the links above.

Is that your ultimate conclusion, or are you baiting, again?
