Corona Virus 2019-nCoV

well that means an awful lot of people who wear manufactured masks on the streets are nutso... yes?
I only use it when I go shopping... mainly to minimize infecting the cashiers...who for some damn reason are not protected at all at the moment. Neither are the security staff.. which is utterly amazing when you think on it.

Of course it protects others more than it protects me...but I do get the benefits described in my post..

Front line nurses... nurses in acute care wards both psychiatric and general.

You got it matie... stems from the old Irish idiomatic use of "ies"... if I am not mistaken, then it could be Scotties or Walesie.... lol
A way of rebelling against 'Ole Henry and his modern English perhaps. Mainly good mates talkin' at the pub.

Do all North Americans thunk their American English use is superior or wat?
It's less annoying. We have our annoying fraternity "brothers" but they grow up (most of them) when they leave college.

Cashiers here wear gloves, spray down the debit machine after each customer, don't do the bagging for customers who bring reuseable bags, everyone is to observe the 6 foot rule.

It's true that very few people wear masks so, no, most people here aren't nutso. You people :) go ahead and wear your maskies though, just for grinnies if it makes you feel besties.

No, I don't. But it sounds like you might . . . after all it's "harmless" and no one has said it's a waste of time.

Uh . . . they get COVID via a GI infection - then they have it, and get SARS, and die.
Such an angry and nasty post Billvon.
Why are you so upset?
Perhaps you have some suggestions beyond washing your hands that may help others to deal with this indefinite and badly managed situation in the USA and around the world.

You guys have over 2469 Confirmed cases with over 123 deaths in Washington.Your state yes?
Have you got any suggestions that may improve the outcome for yourself and others?
How serious do you think this global crisis is?

First of all, Billvon is always angry, you should realize that by now.

The testing in Seattle is better than in many other places. Is 123 people a lot in flu season (by the way when asking a question you don't need to suggest the answer with a "yes").

I think this is a serious global crisis. I think well thought out solutions are better than shutting down the entire economy for months and months. Full churches by Easter is stupid of course. :)

Is that a question?
If it is, why do you ask it?
I've never been forced to stay home for an indefinite amount of time, because of a flu season...before!
Nations that underestimate the seriousness of this pandemic as you are doing ( also Trump) have and will pay an extraordinarily high price for doing so. IMO
See you in 2 weeks and I hope you can tell me I am wrong...

Sorry you took it that way. I do find myself annoyed by all the perhaps-well-meaning people who give bad medical advice on the Internet.

Here's one -

Everyone should stop with the quack suggestions (use chloroquine, drink warm water, get a flu shot to stop COVID-19) to prevent people from potentially making the problem worse.

You are not the only one concerned about mis-information, there is a ton of it floating about. Yet surprisingly most of it is because the situation is changing so fast and what was true one day is false the next...
How would you stop this trail of misinformation in such a dynamic situation...?
My first thought is to stop Trump making televised addresses and get him to delegate and only make announcements when it has been thoroughly thought through and concise. ( remove his access to twitter as well while you are at it)

Trust doctors and other medical professionals. Do not trust politicians or people on the Internet. And more importantly, do not _repeat_ information from politicians or people on the Internet.

What do ya'll think of Trump's timeline of wanting ''packed churches by Easter,'' and getting the US back to work by then, as well? While it's important to be optimistic and positive, I think it's a bit premature to be throwing out specific dates. Thoughts?

I read an article earlier that if we loosen the social distancing guidelines too soon, against the wisdom of medical professionals and doctors, we could head into a depression.

According to the Moscow Times Putin has made his first COVID-19 address to the nation. (he also delayed the constitutional vote he had planned.)
Russia: Confirmed: 658 Fatalities : 163

I heard that. So Trump wants his supporters, who tend to be older men, to go to "packed churches" for an hour during the height of the pandemic? That's pretty close to - Darwinism.

In the US we are not only seeing infections increase, but the RATE of infections is still increasing. We are now over 10,000 new cases a day. Until that starts to reverse, and the new infections start to decline, it's nuts to relax any distancing requirements.

And potentially see a death toll in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

It's silly. I do think it's important for someone to be thinking in a rational way about the whole process and then to explain that to the public to reduce irrational panic behavior.

Such as, when the curve begins to flatten and when testing is readily available some additional businesses can begin to reopen, increase hours, whatever. In other words, let people have some idea as to how long they have to plan to no work, talk about the end plan, etc.

The good that could come from all this is that everyone may react better to the next time they need to react to a similar circumstance. Even if it's just the usual flu and cold season, better habits could be formed due to what we are going though now.

We do need a better grip on when the curve flattens and where exactly are the most impacted regions. Flying is going to be questionable for a while I think.

more like national suicide...
Until Trump actually demands that people do not go to Church on Easter Sunday, they most likely will, as their faith will be seen as being tested.
I am sure they will be all quoting some biblical passage about faith in "God's" protection and healing etc..

As an indication of how serious his false hope claim/desire was, in 2015 about 5o.8% of the USA population attended Easter services ( google). There is going to be one hell of lot of viral transmission if even a small percentage turn up. Any effort to contain this bug is going to go out the window.

Surely Trump knows that the amount of viral load in the untested and incubating public domain MUST be massive...
Behind the reported cases are perhaps millions of people that are incubating the virus right now and are not showing any symptoms at all...but will do so over the next 4-20 days

Well, without testing the entire population, that isn't something anyone really knows. But I guarantee someone's estimated it.

Besides, Trump doesn't care about "knowing" anything; he cares about being able to say things, it doesn't matter what they are as long as he looks good. Bullshitting everyone about what a wonderful job you're doing is what he does, it's what he's always done. He seems to believe that, if you repeat something three times, other people believe it. And what do you know, it works with more people than, um, most people realise, or bother thinking about.

Trump has an instinct for a particular technique with what he says and how he acts, and this instinct informs his bullshit level, and how well he just mindfucked half the people in the room.

He needs to stop. He needs to listen to medical professionals and stop worrying about being reelected. It's alarming to make such a bold claim that the virus will be ''over'' and we can all get back to ''normal'' in two weeks? It's alarming in that he doesn't know what he's really talking about, but does anyone else find it strange that he is pinpointing a date when things will be normal again? Like ''America will be open for business'' on April 12th...what? His messaging gives the impression that he believes we all overreacted and ''c'mon already, let's get back to work, now.'' :rolleye:

No one can control a virus' manifestation period, no one can pinpoint what this virus will do right now, least of all Trump. So, I feel his messaging has been reckless and arrogant. Such claims confuse the average person, who will take Trump at his word, and start crowding in churches on April 12th. We haven't built up an immunity as a ''herd'' because we have been self-isolating in many cases. All I know is, if I see governors start ''claiming'' that the virus rates are going down sooner than anyone anticipated, I'll find that suspicious, as it will seem to tie in with the President's messaging. Of course, I'd love for the virus to vanish away without a trace, as if this all was a bad dream, but is that realistic? That, is what he is implying...that we can go back to normal in two weeks because this will somehow...miraculously...be ''over.''

Why would you say that? This is the same guy who thinks that vaccines cause autism.
Behind the reported cases are perhaps millions of people that are incubating the virus right now and are not showing any symptoms at all...but will do so over the next 4-20 days
Probably. But keep in mind that most of them will show no symptoms, or minor enough symptoms that they won't report.

Why? From his perspective, everything is about being re-elected. If he can increase the death rate and see Biden blamed for it, that's a plus in his book.

How could he blame Biden though, for his misspeaking about CV19?
