Atheism - what it means - a proposed forum standard

On topic, I'll just point out that atheism is always a chosen position; a considered opinion.
An atheist is someone who has chosen not to be a theist.
Atheism is the choice to not embrace theism.

[thread=71199]Old poll[/thread]. Even Dawkins allows the possibility that God exists.

Yeah, 6.9 out of 7.0. Is there any deity he does not reject?

Thats only if the parents have brought them up as atheists.

Its similar to how you might bring up children without education. You cannot choose to be not educated if you were sent to school from nursery. Only if you weren't

Like if you were brought up Muslim? You had no choice?

Gustav:
Yeah, thats a new experiment. You'd think people would learn from what atheism did to the Jews, but no. They have to try and fix what ain't broke. The future looks very bleak for humanity.

Its called fitrah in Islam. People are born with an inclination to theism. Atheism is not the norm. Its the abnorm or whatever that is called.

Actually no one cares about atheists much. Ever heard of a movement against atheism?

bogus lies
first off it is a state of innate goodness
god is an unwarranted correlation

secondly
this innate goodness is bullshit
kids are assholes
they have to be civilized
thru reasoned discourse rather than the rantings of madmen

You should read some more.

Fitra is the natural state, hence a person does not convert to Islam, he/she reverts to it.

Thats a matter of discipline, but no one is born without the potential for good.

sam,

Its called fitrah in Islam. People are born with an inclination to theism.
This is interesting Islamic dogma and explains a lot about the Islamic outlook. In essence this says that people are born good and then it takes others to corrupt them.

This is largely the opposite of Christianity which says everyone is born tainted by original sin.

The two fantasies each create distinct outlooks that are widely observable.

(1) The Christians believe that they are basically bad and that causes a state of humility, and need for forgiveness, and the need to atone and do good.

(2) The Muslims believe they start out good (in tune with Allah) and that creates a state of arrogance and intolerance of others, and the need to defend themselves against external influences through any means necessary and with violence as needed.

So its better to think everyone is born evil and so you should go liberate them and re-educate them? Rather than believe everyone is born good and doesn't need liberation but education?

Is it not better just to think that everyone is born... and leave it at that - with no assumption of good or evil?

pfft
in what context?

the more i read, the more disgusted i get at the irrationality
its also insidious and spiteful

everyone is born a muslim

unfortunately, one has to make an effort to look like one

“Ten things are part of the fitrah: Cutting the Moustache, Letting the Beard grow, Using Siwaak (tooth-stick), Snuffing up water into the nose, Cutting the Nails, Washing the finger-joints, Plucking the Armpit Hairs, Shaving the Pubes and washing the private parts after relieving oneself.”

Now you're delving into practice, not philosophy. Practice is a matter of convention, philosophy a matter of principle.
