The Washoe County School District has agreed to pay $400,000 to settle civil rights lawsuits involving a Muslim girl who dropped out of school after being bullied for wearing a head scarf and her religion.

Jana Elhifny will receive $350,000 in the settlement announced early Wednesday. Stephanie Hart, a non-Muslim who was ostracized when she befriended Elhifny at North Valleys High School and also left school will receive $50,000.

Elhifny and her family came to Reno from Egypt in 2003. In her lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court, she said she faced death threats and harassment, and that school administrators did nothing to stop it.

Just think, a religious minority or apostate who suffered discrimination in a Muslim country probably would have got a kick in the head instead of $350,000.

These things wouldn't even be an issue if we had free interaction and privatization.

Nothing wrong with exploiting islamophobia for profit. Who's hurt feelings aren't worth a good 350 grand?

Yes we should privatize education like communist china.
I think you have it mixed up.

The idea is that in a free interaction (free market) system, these things are not an issue because you can avoid them, and because of private property, people have the right to discriminate or not.

so segregation is the answer? thats what privatization will result in. i think we should encourage people to mix more so they get different perspectives on shit. people tend to segregate themselves enough already, at least, in sydney there's distinct wog/asian suburbs.

The answer is people freely associating.

If they choose to segregate, that is their choice; are you suggesting that we FORCE people to mix? If they want to, they can.

Duh. What if "they" want to "freely associate", but you don't?! You are the very one who makes major claims about individual rights, can't people who don't want to "freely associate" be free to NOT associate?

What if some do and some don't?

Absolutely

Then those that do can and those that don't don't have to.

but what does that segregation lead to? in some cases, racial tension, cos you don't end up with a multicultural society, you get a society populated by small nations (switch racial/nations with whichever distinction applies). i know it'd be nice to let people do what they want, but i don't think its what's best for people.

i'm forcing people to mix in that i'm not allowing privatization, that is the full extent of my proposal. you've already pointed out that privatization "gives people the right to discriminate", and that worries me. your answer to a muslim getting teased in school is 'we'll just send all the muslims somewhere else then'. i think our answer should be we need people to mix more so they realise 'the same heart beats in every breast' kinda thing.

What you're basically saying is "I want it to be this way; I'm right, you're wrong, you will do what I say or I will initiate force against you"

Sounds oddly like statism

You can't disallow privatization for me; only for yourself. You can't make decisions for others

So I shouldn't have the right to choose the people I associate with?

Ah, so you support stripping people of their freedom.

My answer is to not have public schools; then, this isn't an issue as all associations are voluntary and funded privately, and people are free to do as they please.

i agree that i am forcing my beliefs upon others, but that's what every government does. in my posts i've assumed that we would be taking on that role. leaving people free to do as they please isn't what's best for society. i'm only trying to enforce non-privatization for primary and secondary education, in the hope of reducing stereotypes, prejudices etc. i haven't thought this thing out any further than that.

what you're suggesting is segregation, which will lead to further alienation of minorities, which is what caused the problem in the first place. even having their own schools/clubs etc. they're going to have to interact with other groups at some point. unless they remain within fully contained mini-societies, is that a possibility?

And it's stupid

Ultimately someone must make the choices; therefore even with government, PEOPLE are still in charge. It's just some people over others; what makes them any better?

And you do not get to decide what is "best for society", only best for yourself.
i'm only trying to enforce non-privatization for primary and secondary education
That isn't your choice, however

what you're suggesting is segregation

No, I am suggesting free association. If people freely choose to associate with minorities and mix, then that is great. If not, I am not going to force them to.
