Time Travel is Science Fiction

Maybe, like me, they do see theoretical possibilities in anything not disallowed by the laws of physics and GR.
It's dumb, calling that woo science.

What do the laws of physics tell you about things that move at relativistic speeds? Not spacetime, space or time things, but the actual physical conditions or state of matter moving with such speeds. You seem to think there are no other physics to overcome other than GR. There is much more. GR might allow it, but quantum theory, nuclear physics and chemical physics deny it.

:)
Well tell me, what would you call it?
if I ventured off into the galaxy at 99.999% c, and returned to Earth 12 months later...I have aged 12 months biologically, and all physical apparatus including clocks, on board with me, have also aged 12 months.
But lo and behold, I hop out of my new age space ship, and find I am on Earth 225 years in the future...
Tell me again rivers, that it isn't time travel.

paddoboy, no ifs, ands or buts - no one has ever, in physical reality, made the journey you speak of! It is only a theoretical conception - and can not be accomplished in reality! You know this - or at least you should!

However, just to placate you and the "simple game" you continuously engage in, a quote from the "theoretically conceivable" Seavy Harcasm :

Not the exact journey, but journeys conceptually the same are undertaken regularly (and currently, continuously). I expect you know this.

I'll tell you what...Why not argue your incredible pessimism and other facts you are so sure will never be overcome with NASA....
It may well turn out as you suggest...we just don't really know.....
But I will support the continuing ongoing research into space/time warping, and relativistic travel that is being undertaken by those far more reputable then you.
Nothing has ever succeeded without trying, and pessimism never opened up any new frontiers...that I do know.

No ifs or buts my little friend, but once again your contribution amount to zero......zilch...naught....

Probably being as isolated as you are in that cocoon of yours, you may not have heard of NASA, JPL and other studies into alternative propulsion methods, including possible space/time manipulation and relativistic speeds.

Ever heard of the Alcubierre drive?
Yep, plenty of difficult side effects to overcome, but it's not Impossible, and given time, could well be achieved.

The Question
(Submitted March 26, 1997)

Can humans go back or forward in time ( in the future )? If yes then how?

The Answer
An interesting question....can humans travel back and forward in time. I presume that you are asking about travel in time like you see on television or in the movies. But let me take a more scientific (if simplified) approach.

The laws of science do not distinguish between the forward and backward directions of time -- yet they do distinguish the past from the future (time increases as disorder increases). There are some solutions to the equations of General Relativity which would allow for travel back and forth in time....(1) would require that you move faster than the speed of light, but we know that this cannot be done; (2) would require space-time to be very warped and a sort of "tunnel" between two space-time points to be present (called a "wormhole"). Such tunnels would not last long enough on their own for anyone to travel through them (unless the traveler discovered some way or built some machine which would keep the tunnel open). There are all sorts of other conditions which would have to be imposed on space-time in order for human beings to travel into the past. All of these conditions tend to conspire against time travel being more than a theoretical possibility. But, as of 1997, our understanding of physics causes the possibility of time travel to remain an open question. NOTE: What I have said here is related to big objects like humans...and my comments do not necessarily apply to very small (subatomic) objects.

Hope this helps,

"theoretical possibility", not Physical Reality!
Ergo : Time Travel is Science Fiction - not Science Fact!

And this has to do with time travel because.....

"theoretical possibility", not Physical Reality!

Of course the general attitude at NASA, JPL and the John Glenn research Labs are more open than one single physics answering school questions.

You really should broaden your research areas dmoe, and do less of the fine tooth comb detailing you are known for [at least with that terrible mainstream cheer leader we have infesting the place] and you maybe able then to see the forests that you so often miss while checking out the trees.

None of the research will be easy...some will require new physics, or applications we have not heard of yet, but they are not against the laws of physics or GR.
But as I mentioned up there somewhere, pessimism never discovered anything, did it? You do agree with that don't you?
So why not take a leaf out of my book, and the many folks at JPL and John Glenn Labs, and brighten up.

Again, none of what has been discussed [at least by me] is against the laws of physics or GR.
And are being researched.

And this has to do with time travel because.....

New propulsion methods besides taking us to the stars in reasonable lifetimes, could also lead to time travel of the twin variety of course....and this is also under consideration.

Time travel of a sort also occurs for objects in gravitational fields. Einstein had another remarkable theory called General Relativity, which predicts that time passes more slowly for objects in gravitational fields (like here on Earth) than for objects far from such fields. So there are all kinds of space and time distortions near black holes, where the gravity can be very intense.

In the past few years, some scientists have used those distortions in space-time to think of possible ways time machines could work. Some like the idea of "worm holes," which may be shortcuts through space-time. This and other ideas are wonderfully interesting, but we don't know at this point whether they are possible for real objects. Still the ideas are based on good, solid science. In all time travel theories allowed by real science, there is no way a traveler can go back in time to before the time machine was built.

I am confident time travel into the future is possible, but we would need to develop some very advanced technology to do it. We could travel 10,000 years into the future and age only 1 year during that journey. However, such a trip would consume an extraordinary amount of energy. Time travel to the past is more difficult. We do not understand the science as well.

Actually, scientists and engineers who plan and operate some space missions must account for the time distortions that occur because of both General and Special Relativity. These effects are far too small to matter in most human terms or even over a human lifetime. However, very tiny fractions of a second do matter for the precise work necessary to fly spacecraft throughout the solar system.
