The Ends and the Means

Do the ends justify the means?

I think the severity of the crimes used and the level of paradise (the ultimate outcome) are huge factors in determining the ethics attached to the question. Through the conversations above (including the old woman on fire and the totalitarian examples), how far we are willing to go varies according to the difference in pain versus pleasure. I believe the end justifies the means when the pleasure and goodness at the end outweigh the pain in the means - assuming you can accurately predict the good of the outcome and the pain of the process.
