I can see the logic of the sentence, given how useful cellphones are for conducting your criminal career from behind bars, but it doesn't mean that they'll be able to keep him from getting his hands on another cellphone--and once you've given someone a 60-year sentence, how much more time can you meaningfully give him for a repeat offence? If you're going to stay in prison until you die anyway, what have you got to lose by being as naughty as you can possibly get away with, and what does it matter if you're caught?
I can also see the logic in sodomizing women's children in front of them so they will tell interrogators where their terrorist husbands all. I can also see the logic of shutting down journalists who criticize the government.

I can't believe the judge didn't order his execution. Liberal Texas judges make me sick. Just think of the message it would send to the rest of the prison population.
I agree, a death sentence would've hit the spot.
Although, the problem with long sentences has already been addressed above; they are so impractical that prisoners just won't care. There should be a sentence limit of 15 years, and the highest thing being the death penalty.
...Because Ross was found to be a habitual offender, the range of punishment for having a cell phone in a correctional facility was 25 years to 99 years or life. Normally the range of punishment would be 2 to 10 years.
After 30 minutes of deliberation the jury assessed his punishment at 60 years in TDCJ. The sentence is stacked on top of the one he currently is serving....

Usually its a group effort between the judge's "advice" and the juries decision.
Death sentences are proven to *not* be deterrents, you guys. So that does no good. The states that regularly practice the death penalty (shitholes like Texas) have more crime per capita than states that do not. Such has been the case for a hundred years.
The conclusion? Overly long sentences suck. Death penalties suck. We in the USA have WAY more people in prison for the amount of crime that takes place here than do other developed countries. And yet we still have more crime than those countries, per capita. Something is fundamentally wrong with that picture.
FACTUAL STATISTIC: 1% of the USA population is currently behind bars.
1% may not seem high.. but in fact that is 3 million out of 300 million people. That's huge.

25 years for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle! Many murderers & most rapists don't get that. Then 60 years for having a cell phone! Most murderers & 1 or 2 time rapists don't get that. Insane.

What would the sentence have been if he had had a gun. I think every inmate who gets a cellphone will figure they might as well get a big bag of heroin and a gun.
Also any inmate who is about to be searched and has a cellphone on his person MIGHT AS WELL KILL THE GUARD.

I think a strong deterrent would be to use the traditional punish the family of the person approach. Criminals will often think twice if they know their children will be punished or their wives.
We can't reward the masochist criminals out there.

i think its about 8000 years for having a gun. and then you're executed 7 times. if you're a repeat offender we crash the earth into the sun and blame it on you.
