Taxing trusts and foundations...

It seems like the super rich hide their money in tax exempt trusts and foundations. Shouldn't the people demand we tax them just like we are taxed to redistribute their wealth?

It would appear that you don't quite understand trusts or foundations. For example, one can hardly "hide" money in a foundation. Can you describe in detail how that is possible?

How do they hide their money then?

We have lots of ways - and I'm sure not about to post instructions here!!! And neither will BillyT or anyone else that takes advantage of them. While it saves on taxes it certainly isn't free.

Perhaps you should learn a little more, perhaps a LOT more, before you start making unfounded accusations of impropriety or illegality.

Or is it just that you hate other people having more than you have????

I didn't know asking questions would lead to such accusations.

That said, I'm interested in learning about alot things for alot of reasons. Don't hurt yourself trying to figure out where I'm coming from and I'll promise to reciprocate.

Exactly what is the basis of your claim to being deserving of any part of their money, if not the fact of your own rather pedestrian existence?

What makes you think you're automatically deserving of the involuntary charity of others?

What makes you naturally exempt from the obligation to personally produce your own contribution of involuntary charity to others?

Inquiring minds want to know.

An intelligibly logical answer would be appreciated.

Feeling up for it?

Allow me to go back to the beginning to address something that I didn't initally.

Whenever someone uses the term "redistribute wealth" it automatically rings several alarm bells in my mind. The first being that it's THEIR money and no one has any right to redistribute any of it. And the second is that people who make such suggestions don't realize it but THEY are the ones who are acting selfish. If it's my money I want to use it how I want to use it and it disgusts me when someone is so presumptuous that they think they know better how it should be applied. And I honestly think that all those silly people feel the same about THEIR money as I do mine.

And the next thing I think of is that those people are mostly jealous of those who have more than they do.

I've got a much better suggestion - let's all take your money, desi, and redistribute it among ourselves. You do realize, don't you, that to many, many people in this world you are among the super-rich?

Funny thing about the obligatory sense of personal obligation: Someone's always telling you how you're more obliged than they themselves.

One could wonder why that is...

The government of Canada has recently started taxing trusts. A bunch of old people complained. Moving on....

I'm just curious about how they duck taxes. I wanted to rile up the peanut gallery in the process.

The people with guns have the authority to redistribute our wealth, its not a good idea to argue with the barrel of a gun. They seem to mess with some people and not others. I want to know the difference so they leave me alone when I have wealth beyond avarice.

The government taxes people and the weight of it hits poor old desi. You guys must be getting hit with the alternative minnimum tax to be so pissy about it.

The difference should be obvious. It's not JUST a matter of money but an important little thing called influence. ;)

Money IS influence.

But only IF it's used for that purpose. There are people who have lots of money but keep completely to themselves and avoid dealing with anyone else. Part of that is because they don't want their wealth to be known. I happen to know four individuals like that. They neither ask for nor want any special treatment nor attention. Outsiders would think they are just ordinary regular folks living an ordinary life.

Yes. Those are more respectable people then the ones who use their money to make the world worse...

Well... although they could use their wealth for a good purpose...

And many of them do exactly that - but you'd never know it. They don't want the attention.
