Sci -fi is the imaginations of people and I noticed technology wasn't chosen on the poll nor fear. If such a knowledge exist it wouldn't have dust on it and the public would be aware of it.
Rockets are expensive. People who make rockets make lots and lots of money. If someone makes cheaper rockets, then you make less money(until someone realizes that the increased amount of space travel possible makes up for it), so you make sure that this doesn't happen.;)

** But that one good craft, made to endure, perhaps the builders need a purpose to express their craftsmanship, and give astronomers back their dreams.Perhaps NASA should go back to the moon and beyond if it can,and shut the public's mouth, give human knowledge a chance, just to see if we can. :D

The technology hasn't continued at the rate we saw early/mid last century. More money needs to be put into long term technological advancement R&D.

And companies see no guaranteed profits from that research, so it's not going to happen unless NASA or someone similar does it, and the politicains are too busy lining their own pockets.

Yes, it has to be governmental and therefore demanded by the people. But, everybody is too shortsighted for that. Maybe that will change, I hope so.

what is it that has to be done? what kind of projects would be useful to us?
what improvements can we make on the current objectives of nasa......etc

Robotics

** So much money is wasted on clones. We don't need no more humans, but robots would be nice to blast off in space. Or is this just a dream as well.

I am in agreement with fadingCaptain on the need for funding for the intangables of research.

Traditionally, the government has funded what individual companies can not or will not. For a company to fund research there must be an end result in sight so that profit may be realised. A good example of that would be a drug maker.

Columbus was financed much the same way, to discover a new way to the fabulous trading routes that were so profitable. (The Queen being the head of the government)

Offshoots of the space research have affected almost every aspect of our lives. Still short sighted people ask why spend the money. The medical field alone saves countless lives that would be lost with advances due strickly to offshoots of space research. This is not to mention other advances, such as calculators, computers, advanced plastics, medical skills, and totally new ways of doing things. The paybacks from such research are not easily determined in their value to mankind at the start. Once they are a mature technology everyone takes them for granted as another new advance that is no longer new. Without the boost from the space technology research, they would not exist.

How are you feeling?

Share your emotions of the space mission, the deaths of the astronomers, while doing so also reflect and be thankful for the bravery and knowlege collected through them for us. And let not this flaw halter our curosity of deep space but rather gives us insight into our own technology.

I think too many people expect a huge leap into Star Trek. You have to understand that space exploration is a VERY gradual process. This is probably one of the most important part of human existence that we have. People do not want to stop consuming the earths finite resources. Because we have such a tendency to consume, we need to find a way to exist on other planets as soon as possible. I know that this wont occur for atleast another two centuries, but it must happen.

If someone says to you that the space program is stupid, ask them why. They will probably say that it is too expensive...... The US government's primary spending is in the military. Hmmmm... narrow minded enough for ya?

Look at it in a postive light NASA does have the heart of the public even more so than ever.;)

Robotic Dreams

It's nice to see fear is still not checked on the poll. That's the spirit, anyways, I still wonder how NASA is doing in robotic's perhaps boy's should send their toy's before themselves. It's a mandatory field for the exploration of space......Do it for the ladies.

Lack of funds now has the highest percent of people? Strange

Remember- Lack of funds is directly related to interest. The public's lack of interest in NASA is the largerst and most general problem facing continued space exploration.

Lack of funds!

If we had continued spending for NASA like we did back in the 60's we would have been to Mars and back by now, have fully functional and even self-sustaining moon base(s), have advance space propulsion (LEO and above), Have much cheaper Earth to LEO fully reusable rockets or Single-stage-to-LEO or even Hypersonic jets.

But the money gave out as soon as we beat the Russians and people stopped giving a dam about space because it turned out that the only reason we went up there was because we thought the Russians were going to beat us! 20 year later people start wounding why we are not back on the moon and start claiming things like we had never been there or something. It is a catch 22 effect: we cut funding we don’t see any improvement or we only see failures so we cut funding again and repeat! Space would have been glorious but it is obviously not for a butch of tribe warring talking monkeys like us. As long as we only give a dam about blowing each other up we will never go back to space like that again.

Lack of funds is also a possible reason why we lost Columbia. Do you know how much matinence was skipped on her, and how her safety record has been plummeting in recent years? NASA tried to cut courners again... shoddy insulation for the ET, they even had the mechanical arm onboard Columbia removed, and Columbia hadn't even been updated to dock with the Space Station. Just like with Challenger... budget concerns... politics, launch scedules... and Apollo 1 was more of the same... flammable cheap space suits, a poorly designed hatch, useing pure oxygen for the cabin...

So now, 23 Astronauts including those from Apollo 1, Challenger, Columbia, and training accidents. It's all about the money...

The Russians started out using 14.6lb per inch pressure and normal atm. unlike the Americans they were willing to pay the extra price in weight. Ya I agree with more money this would not have happened same for Challenger.

But now I bet they will suffer even more budget cuts!

most people don't care about scientists' grandoise plans. they want their taxes lowered, and thier kids college tuition payed for.
