Sciforums' Medieval Total War battles

Regarding RTCW ET, make sure you patch to v2.60, then v2.60b, otherwise you wont see anything.

God damn. This reminds of the pain I had to go through when I wanted to play Painkiller. First I had to install version 1.0, then I had to patch to 1.3 before I could patch to 1.61... Then after all of this, I could patch to 1.62. Of course, this is all after I wait 2 hours to download the huge patches off of slow servers.

Fuck yes for bit torrent... 8 minutes to download version 2.60

And why won't hamachi connect? It's been trying to connect for 10 minutes already.

The multiplayer element of RTCW always seemed to be a bit of a novelty, a sort of add-on to the single player element, theres no all vs all deathmatch type games and weapons are not that balanced. I cant be bothered with the "objectives" half the time.

Something like Unreal Tournament is built specifically for multiplayer, I prefer that (like maybe the original 1999 version).

Finally, I was on the battlefield!

I suck! :D

*Keep blaming connection for failure*

yesterday the last thing we did was a match of MTW. Nick vs TDI and spuriousmonkey.

TDI insisted I would only take cavalry. He would just take infantry. So he tries to pin down the enemy. I envelope the enemy slightly. Then he says GO! As in hit the enemy from the back. And as soon as he says it his troops start running. I send some cavalry in, the ones that were basically already committed, but it was suicide.

So he runs and my best cavalry units lie in shambles. I have mostly cheap horse archers left with no valour whatsoever. We do the big chasing game. Nick has mostly infantry so he runs after my cavalry. I have to click and sort units frantically to not let them get caught. TDI rallies his leftovers several times (7 times according to himself). At one point I think about just giving up. But I got a lucky brake at one point. One unit becomes separated from the pack. I hit it from two sides with cavalry in the hope they run and become easy prey and so they do.

I continue in the hope Nick will make more of these small mistakes. But then TDI has some troops rallied that block the progress of the superior forces of Nick. I have his forces pretty much surrounded by horse archers. I send one unit of horse archers that spend their arrows in to hit the enemy from the back. And all of nick's troops begin to run!!!

game over man!

Psychology does play a role in this game. Units do not like to be surrounded. They don't like to be without their general (TDI often seems to hold his general back, which may diminish the chances of him dying, but it also decreases moral of your troops), they don't like to see dead people in their unit, and they don't like to be attacked from the back and they especially don't like to be attacked from the front and back.

And I think last night was one of these rare occasions all of these came together.

This is good game description.

I could almost feel sword in my hand, mud beneath my feet, smell of spilled blood in my nostrils...
