Saudi King to launch inter-faith meet

In a first for a Saudi Arabian leader, King Abdullah will convene a conference in Madrid as part of a Saudi outreach to defuse interfaith tensions, improve Islam's image, and restore respect for religious values.

King Abdullah's initiative – a three-day meeting starting July 16 that will include Muslim, Christian, and Jewish clerics, as well as representatives of Eastern religions – stands out among interfaith gatherings that have become commonplace in the post-9/11 world.

Wonder why he changed the venue from Mecca, I'm guessing the Muttawwas were not too pleased.

Seems like a pleasant idea to me. Nothing earthshatteringly significant, but it's a nice idea nonetheless.

That's like getting the oil companies together to figure out our energy policy.

Yeah, we should have Dawkins holding an interfaith meet, that would be a gas.

They probably want to discuss ways to make their faiths more appealing to people in today's day and age. If anything, it will soften some of the more rigid dogmas.

HElllooooooo.... CoS???

"restore respect for religious values."

A very bad idea, indeed.

I'm still wondering why the Church of Scientology wasn't also invited?!?

What do they care? Isn't Universality the central tenet in Islam?

Yeah, but like mass murdering atheists, there is no logic for people's behaviour.

Yeah, but like mass murdering atheists, there is no guarantee that people's beliefs will be consistent with behaviour.

There is every reason to believe that people's actions will follow the patterns of their previous actions, though.

Which is why a meeting to "restore respect for religious values" taking place in Saudi Arabia under Saudi governmental auspices, is something that would fit right in on the front page of the Onion.

That actually speaks in favor of the Arabs

You recently said it was wrong to speak of arabs, giving the impression that they were a homogenous group. So please list, in alphabetical order who exactgly you are referring to. I'll start the ball rolling.

Why would Muslims want to mass murder atheists? Is that in the Quran?

"YUSUFALI: Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

PICKTHAL: Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.

SHAKIR: So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates. That (shall be so); and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have exacted what is due from them, but that He may try some of you by means of others; and (as for) those who are slain in the way of Allah, He will by no means allow their deeds to perish. If you assign behaviors as racial characteristics, and edit your history carefully.

I was thinking more of the people actually involved.
