Possession

Could there be another subjective in it's own right aside from ourselves? Could there be another awareness in the same body, but only at times strong enough to take control?

If not, why couldn't it be?

The correct question is "if so, why should it be?"

One's cognitive awareness comes from the neurons and synapses that fire in the brain. The brain is one's own. There are not the brain's of others that have been shown to co-exist in a single body. It has been shown, however, that neural pathways can become damaged or faulty in the brain, presenting all sorts of problems such as not recognizing yourself in a mirror, losing control over limbs that may even attempt to strangle the individual, believing one's parents are impostors, or thinking that one's missing/amputated limb can still feel pain or even touch objects.

This isn't due to "another awareness" in the same body, but due to faulty/damaged neural pathways.

There is no such thing as "demon possession" or "possession" by others of the individual. It simply doesn't happen. Nor can it at current levels of technology.

You asked, why should it happen?

If we grant that MPD's does exists and that they are not liars then it is true to say that they have multiple personalities (or identities) within themselves. Their awareness of what is happening is in the background or perhaps they are not aware at all.

If you talked to such a person, while having this other identity, would you not think he/she is aware? Even though subjectivally the identity that should be the one talking to you is in the background, or not aware at all.

Sometimes that person is subjectivally aware that the other identities exists, and may even talk to them, as imagined as it sounds, it becomes real when that person is taken over.
